As economic globalization keeps its process, countries and regions tie closer in mutual economic development, with competition being fiercer. As a vehicle for global economic exchange, translation of economic literature becomes indispensable. This report selects Section 1,Part 4 of Corporate Fraud Exposed: A Comprehensive and Holistic Approach as translation text.Considering the features of financial texts and disparate linguistic habits between English and Chinese, the present author translates the text under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory through various translation techniques to achieve functional equivalence at lexical, syntactic, discourse and stylistic levels with the following two guiding principles: information orientation and reader orientation. In addition, the present author uses corpus retrieval tools, like Word Smith7.0 and Ant Conc,to compare the wording and style of the original and translated texts in order to achieve the closest equivalence and produce idiomatic expressions. This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background and requirements of this translation task as well as the source text. The second chapter describes the whole translation process, including pre-translation preparations,during-translation and difficulties in translation. The third chapter sheds light on Nida’s functional equivalence theory and its enlightenment for this translation task. The fourth chapter is the main body of the report--case analysis. The last chapter makes a summary according to the whole translation practice.Through research and comparative analysis, the present author comes to conclusions that free translation is a feasible translation strategy employed in financial terminology translation, that conversion is indispensable in achieving lexical equivalence, and that amplification is advisable in culture-load words translation. At syntactic level, when tackling long and complex sentences, the present author adopts sequential translation, comprehensive method, inverted translation, etc in pursuing syntactic equivalence. At discourse level, repetition, omission and addition are all feasible strategies in enhancing cohesion and coherence of the target text. Also, for financial translation, literal translation and explicitation are commonly used strategies in achieving stylistic equivalence, and corpus retrieval tools are applicable in evaluating the degree of equivalence, especially in stylistic equivalence. To sum up,the present author sees Nida’s functional equivalence theory as an ideal guiding theory for this translation practice in that it provides both micro and macro perspectives and serves both theoretical and practical significance.
