A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Custom Of The Country Under Peter Newmark’s Translation Theory

The text of this translation report is an excerpt from The Custom of the Country,written by an American realist novelist—Edith Wharton.The novel,published in 1913,portrays an amazing life experience of Undine Spragg who once was an unknown girl living in a small city,but finally succeeds in becoming an upper class aristocrat in New York City through her endeavor and four marriages,which vividly depicts the life of the American nobility in the early 20 th century.This translation practice project comes from a translation project of Edith Wharton’s trilogy entrusted by Great Star Media Co,.Ltd.Encouraged by the translator of this project,also the supervisor of the author of this translation report(hereinafter referred to as the AR),the AR participated in the translation practice of The Custom of the Country and translated the first five chapters of the novel,which can give some suggestions for the supervisor’s final version.Besides,the AR’s understanding of the techniques for literary translation can be improved in the translation process.The AR consciously applies Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation to guide the translation.The translation practice report attempts to clearly introduce the translation process and analyzes how Newmark’s translation theories are applied to literary translation.Specifically,how the AR tries to recreate the writing style and language characteristics of the original work and optimizes the reading experience of readers based on Newmark’s translation theory.The major findings of the report include: Under the guidance of semantic translation,the AR retains the semantic implications in the original sentence,keeps the rhetorical devices in the novel,and preserves the sentence structures with special intention;Under the guidance of communicative translation,the AR uses amplification and omission in the translation to keep the coherence of the sentence,rearranges the word order to maintain the logicality of the translation,adopts free translation to make the translation easy to understand,and uses four-character structure to strengthen the literariness of the translation.
