A Study Of Nationalist-themed Cartoons In The Modern Sketch

The 1930s were a time of national peril.With humorous cartoons as the weapon,The Modern Sketch published a large number of nationalistic themed cartoons to criticize social life and decadent political situation and expose current affairs of the war,so as to encourage the public,promote the war of resistance and promote national and social progress.This paper takes the nationalistic comics of The Modern Sketch as the research object,systematically summarizes the cartoon images,analyzes the categories,visual art styles and rhetorical ways of the nationalistic comics of The Modern Sketch and explores the construction methods and functional effects of its nationalism.The first part traces the background and development of The Modern Sketch.It was founded in a specific commercial economy,cultural and political environment.Based on the initial experience,the editorial department contacted cartoonists from all over the country and formed a relationship with many magazines at that time.The second part of the paper classifies and analyzes the nationalistic theme cartoons of The Modern Sketch.the nationalistic themed cartoons can be divided into three categories.And in combination with relevant historical materials and documents to each of the graphic content of the detailed description.The third part of the article focuses on the visual design and artistic style of The Modern Sketch.On the one hand,the visual style of The Modern Sketch is analyzed from both macro and micro perspectives,and the visual style of ethnic themed works related to The Modern Sketch is explored from the aspects of publishing arrangement,columns,special titles,layout and graphic relations.On the other hand,it analyzes its artistic style from the perspective of Chinese and Western art,and analyzes how Times Manga skillfully uses Chinese and Western art techniques and themes.The fourth part of the article selects the visual rhetorical devices used in the nationalistic comics of The Modern Sketch.Through research and analysis,the rhetoric modes related to the theme of nationalism mainly fall into five types: metaphor,exaggeration,comparison,irony and comparison.The fifth part of the article focuses on the way of constructing nationalism and its political artistic efficacy.On the one hand,it explores how the editorial department of The Modern Sketch reconcilates political and commercial attributes in the magazine,arranges revolutionary and enlightening contents,and completes the construction of nationalist consciousness.On the other hand,this paper analyzes the political and artistic functions of the nationalistic themed works of The Modern Sketch.
