This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of Handbook of Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision(excerpts).Handbook of Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision is a book published by World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd.It is a collection of the latest achievements in the field of pattern recognition and computer vision. The translation project was commissioned by Guo Tao,a researcher in the field of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. The translated book will be published by Tsinghua University Press to help Chinese scholars and researchers in the field. After completion of translation work guided by the Text Type Theory of Peter Newmark and translation methods of communicative translation and semantic translation, the translator selected about 15,000 words and their translation as the research objects, and discussed the translation techniques in the translation of this scientific and technological text, and finished this practice report.According to Newmark’s Text Type Theory, texts can be divided into three types:informational texts, expressive texts and vocative texts.Newmark also puts forward two main translation methods which are communicative translation and semantic translation, and believes that translators should adopt different translation methods for texts of different type. The source text of this translation practice is a typical informative text which has an objective, accurate and logical expression. The source text includes many manner adverbials, multiple attributive clauses, frequent uses of passive voices, abundant first person pronouns and extensive uses of sci-tech terms and plenty of abstract nouns. The translator studies both translation methods, analyzes the requirements of the translation project client and the source text features, and then adopts both communicative translation and semantic translation methods. In the translation, under the guidance of Newmark’s methods of communicative translation and semantic translation, the translator uses translation techniques of separation of manner adverbials from sentences, addition of pronouns to attributive clauses, transformation of passive voices, transition of first person pronouns, literal translation of derived and compounding words, zero translation of initialism and blending words and conversion of abstract nouns into concrete expressions,so as to accurately convey the source text’s information,as well as to make the target text better understood and accepted by readership. Finally,it summarizes the source text features acquired and translation techniques adopted under the guidance of Newmark’s Text Type Theory as well as his methods of communicative translation and semantic translation, and some deficiencies remained in the translation work and this report are also presented.
