The series of textbooks New Vision College English is a set of international and three-dimensional college English textbooks jointly developed by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and Macmillan Publishers Limited, with the participation of many Chinese and foreign educational experts and university teachers, which is designed for the teaching of college English at the level of “general requirements.” Each level consists of An Integrated Course,Listening and Speaking,Integrative Training, and Long Text Reading with significantly multimodal features such as colorful pictures and illustrations.Guided by the theories of visual grammar and intersemiotic complementarity, this thesis explores the multimodality of New Vision College English textbooks with the linguistic analysis tool ELAN6.2.The corpus data are selected from 8 representative units in New Vision College English Listening and Speaking and New Vision College English An Integrated Course according to the theme of the unit. From the time sequence of students’ college entrance, study, job hunting, and career decision-making attitude to analyze the multimodal features in New Vision College English series textbooks and the co-construction of textual meaning among different modes, the research aims to solve the following three problems :1)What kind of multimodal features does New Vision College English hold? 2)How do different modes in New Vision College English co-construct textual meaning? 3)What is the enlightenment of the multimodality in New Vision College English to cultivate students’ multiliteracies? The thesis finds that 1)The modes of vision, audio, and language mode run through New Vision College English textbooks. It mainly presents six modes: image mode, audio mode, language mode, color mode, gesture mode, and space mode. There is a coordination and cooperation relationship between them, which join hands with each other to build the significance of the unit.Nevertheless, the proportion of modes is different, which presents the major and minor relationship.2)The highest proportion of image modes focuses on creating learning situations and the overall presentation of thematic information. In auditory mode,a declarative tone is a leading tone to provide knowledge.Color mode builds thematic meaning with language and image modes by strengthening tonal contrast.Indicative gestures are frequently used in gesture modes, presenting vivid scenes for students. The space mode pays attention to the overall presentation of the theme information of the unit to cultivate students’ overall perception and logical thinking ability. The meaning of the unit theme is constructed by combining language with an auditory and visual modality. The proportion of repetition is the highest in the concept of complementary relationships. The textbook pays attention to students’ cognitive rules and uses images to explain vocabulary meaning.3)The multimodality of teaching materials has realized the visualization of complex knowledge and the dual coding of language cognition through the combination of language and non-language symbols, making complex implicit knowledge explicit about strengthening students’ cognition.4)There are still some deficiencies in the textbooks, such as less proportion of Chinese element image mode and language mode and the mismatch of visual mode, auditory mode, and language modes.5)Multimodal teaching materials are beneficial for teachers to change the philosophy of teaching and teaching methods in the classroom to enhance students’ multiliteracies. To some degree, this study can enrich the theoretical research on the multidimensional teaching material research system of foreign languages. It also helps to use multimodality college English teaching materials to improve the interest in English learning and cultivate students’ multiliteracies.
