English-Chinese Translation Of Narrative Discourse In The Science Fiction The Doors Of Eden(Excerpt)

As one of the most common types of literary works,novel can be divided into many categories,and science fiction is one of them.Science fiction is popular because of its literary,fantasy,scientific and interesting characteristics.The main reason is that the author uses a lot of narrative discourses in the text,and readers of novel are very interested in narrative discourses,which encourages them to enjoy reading science fiction.In recent years,not many foreign science fictions have been translated into Chinese,and it is still domestic works that have led to the dominant position of science fictions in China.To change this situation,more foreign science fiction must be imported into China,so that more domestic readers can understand foreign science fictions.The difficulty of translating foreign novels lies in the handling and grasping of details.The translation of narrative discourse in science fictions is one of the difficulties.The difficulty in translating the narrative discourse in science fiction is what methods should be used to achieve its function.This paper is a translation practice report.Through the translation of narrative discourses in The Doors Of Eden(excerpt),it intends to solve which translation methods should be used in the Chinese translation of narrative discourses to realize its function,mainly including the dynamic changes of narrator discourses and how to realize the complexity and diversity of character discourses through translation methods.The report is divided into four parts.First,it introduces the translation practice project;second,it analyzes the definition,classification and function of narrative discourse in the text;The third part of the report is the core content,which focuses on analyzing the translation methods of narrator’s and character’s discourse by using comparative method,case analysis method and literature analysis method,combined with specific translation examples.Under the background that foreign English science fiction is becoming more and more popular among readers,this report can accumulate relevant practical experience for the translation practice in the future through the study of the research object,and also provide some inspiration for other translators to translate science fiction well.As for the translation of narrative discourse in science fiction,the author has the following viewpoints: First,the main purpose of translating narrative discourse is to realize the function of narrative discourse.Second,different types of narrative discourse have different functions to achieve,and there is no fixed translation method or translation skill for the corresponding narrative discourse of science fiction,which should be treated differently in translation.Thirdly,literal translation should be mainly used in translating the narrator’s discourse of science fiction,while free translation,voice transformation and open translation should also be used.Fourthly,the translation of characters’ discourse in science fiction should mainly use free translation,while other translation methods or translation skills such as literal translation,word order adjustment and addition should be combined.
