Antjie Krog(1952-)is one of the most remarkable Afrikaans writers of contemporary South Africa. Her works have won a series of awards such as the Norma Award, the Herzog Award, and the Alan Patton Award,as well as have been translated into English,French,German, and other languages. This thesis takes her representative work,Country of My Skull,as the research object.Taking the South African Truth and Reconciliation Movement as the background, this work reflects Krog’s concern for racial reconciliation by mainly presenting the process that victims, persecutors, and political parties during apartheid speak out the truth to achieve racial reconciliation.Tutu’s Ubuntu Thoughts is regarded as the foundation of the Truth and Reconciliation Movement, which mainly includes interdependent humanity, harmonious but different communities, and liberational spirituality.Based on Tutu’s Ubuntu Thoughts, this thesis mainly focuses on exploring Krog’s different attempts to achieve racial reconciliation from these three aspects. The thesis falls into six chapters. The first chapter chiefly introduces Antjie Krog and her work Country of My Skull, summarizes the current research on Country of My Skull at home and abroad, and outlines the research significance and framework of this thesis. The second chapter presents the development of “Ubuntu”,main viewpoints and significance of Tutu’s Ubuntu Thoughts. The third chapter mainly explores Krog’s attempts to ensure that interdependent humanity can achieve reconciliation, including Krog’s exploration of the premise of reconciliation,as well as her exploration of the truth that affects interdependent humanity. The fourth chapter primarily digs out Krog’s efforts to construct a harmonious and diverse community, especially Krog’s commitment to the formation of harmonious but different community awareness and the creation of harmonious but different language—Antjiekaans. The fifth chapter principally probes into Krog’s attempts to transcend race and achieve reconciliation on the spiritual level.Thereinto,Krog transcends race and achieves reconciliation on the spiritual level through poetry and creative non-fiction.The sixth chapter summarizes the main contents and findings of this thesis, pointing out the significance of Krog’s exploration of racial reconciliation.Through the above exploration,it can be seen that Krog’s Country of My Skull provides various valuable thoughts for individuals, communities, and even countries eager to achieve racial reconciliation. At the same time,it also demonstrates the premise and influencing factors of reconciliation,in order to awaken people’s pursuit of self realization,cross-cultural communication, and racial equality.
