| With the upward spiral of globalization, ethnic exchanges and integration begin to gather momentum. On this occasion, the deepening of Chinese characteristics and national identity must be taken high on the list of priorities for cultural scholars involved. This report takes The Study of China’s Borderland Security(Vol.1)as the translation material with chapters 12 and 14 selected. The material is concentrated on the reconstruction of national identity, which serves the needs of the times. This report utilizes Relevance Translation Theory as the theoretical framework, and draws upon the “ostensive-inferential mode”.The argument and analysis are centered around two factors: processing cost and contextual effect, which work to achieve the optimal relevance between the source text and target text.It is found that Relevance Translation Theory is conducive to translation tasks. The theoretical mode it yielded helps to equip translators for knotty problems in translation. With regard to four-character idioms with Chinese cultural ethos, culturally loaded words and proper nouns that demonstrate academic prudence, the writer applies translation skills like amplification to obtain optimal relevance;considering the phenomenon of semantically overlapped sentences and topic-prominent expressions, strategies including chunk adjustments, combination of meanings of sentences and category shifts of sentences from the sentence level are employed to simplify the original text;as for the discourse features of cohesion and coherence, the writer relies on discourse devices like reference, ellipsis, conjunctions and repetition to realize the explicit cohesion of the text at the level of formal meaning and the implicit coherence at the logical level respectively. The translation report is of constructive meaning for translators to make use of RTT as a solution to the difficulties in translating borderland-related materials. It may provide new directions for translators to view and handle the problems in translation in terms of vocabulary, sentences and discourse. This report will make its humble contribution to making the world listen to the voice of scholars dedicated to the culture and livelihood of ethnic minorities in the borderland of China. |
