| This report is based on the Chinese-English translation of Chapter LIN Huiyin and Chapter LIN Zexu in The Mottled History: Tracing the Legacy of Ten Great Names from Sanfang Qixiang. This book was published by Hebei Education Publishing House in 2021.The author JIAN Fuhai describes the stories of ten Chinese historical figures who once lived in Sanfang Qixiang. The two selected chapters introduce the growing stories and main achievements of LIN Huiyin and LIN Zexu respectively, showing their unique experiences and legendary spirits. Therefore, the significance of this translation practice is to help the target readers appreciate the personal charisma of Chinese historical figures, learn about the history of China and understand the Chinese national spirit. The source text belongs to biography literature, and its two main features are historical accuracy and artistic prose style. Therefore, the three major translation difficulties are the cultural interpretation of esoteric allusions, the aesthetic reproduction of romantic metaphors, and the logical reconstruction of parallel structures. As the purpose of this translation practice is to facilitate the international communication of Chinese culture and national spirit, the translator selected George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory as the guiding theory.Based on this translation theory, the translator adopted corresponding translation strategies, including compensating or filtering cultural connotations, retaining or deserting metaphorical vehicles, and dividing or combining parallel structures to solve the above difficulties. The translator has strengthened her competence and learned more translation strategies from this practice. In future translation activities, the translator should further improve her information-searching ability and enrich her cultural knowledge with a more rigorous attitude. It is sincerely expected that this translation practice report can be helpful for the English translation of China’s biography literature. |
