The ecological environment is being destroyed daily, and environmental pollution becomes a burgeoning issue.Pertain to raising people’s ecological awareness, news on Fukushima wastewater has been brought to widespread attention. This thesis intends to adopt discourse analysis to handle the problematic coordination between man and nature and conscientize people to concentrate on environmental protection and venerating nature.Ecological values guide Eco-critical Discourse Analysis(hereafter ECDA).Grounded on the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis(hereafter CDA),it investigates the eco-destructive consciousness hidden in discourse in social structure and discusses the disharmonious relationship between man and nature.Rooted in the theoretical framework containing Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Model,Halliday’s Transitivity System, and Green Grammar, this thesis conducts a comparative study of ECDA of news on Fukushima wastewater with the assistance of Edit Plus 3.0 and UAM Corpus Tool 6.It explores the similarities and differences of the eco-destructive ideology behind the Transitivity System in the news between the two countries. The data of this thesis is selected from 30 news on the foreign-oriented publicity of China Daily, the mainstream editorial in China,Yomiuri Shimbun, and Asahi Shimbun, the mainstream editorials in Japan. This thesis adopts the research methods of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to conduct a comparative analysis of news on Fukushima wastewater. It mainly studies the following three issues 1)What are the distributional patterns of the Transitivity System in Chinese and Japanese news? 2)What similarities and differences between eco-destructive discursive practices are found in the Chinese and Japanese news? 3)What causes the differences in ECDA in the Chinese and Japanese news? The thesis found that firstly, concerning the distribution patterns of the Transitivity System, the proportion of material processes is the highest, the proportion of existential processes is the smallest, and the proportion of relational processes in Chinese news is relatively high.Concerning the primary types of clauses of the transitivity process, there are significant differences in the proportions of ditransitive clauses and ergative clauses of the material process,mental-passive clauses of the mental process, attributive clauses and possessive clauses of the relational process in Chinese and Japanese news.Secondly, the similarities of the Transitivity System of news on Fukushima wastewater are reflected explicitly in the fact that the material process, verbal process, and mental process account for a large proportion of the news of the two countries, which unearths that both countries’ media place significance on environmental pollution. The difference is that the Chinese media adopt more attributive and possessive clauses in the relational process, reflecting that China pays due attention to the relationship between man and nature and the responsibility for environmental issues, highlighting man’s role in nature.Japanese media adopt more mental-passive clauses of mental process, avoiding Japan’s responsibility for local environmental problems.Thirdly, the main reasons for the above differences are the distinctions in writing style and cultural context. The writing style of Chinese media is highly official, and the cultural background emphasizes collectivism;Japanese media writing style is highly subjective, and the cultural background emphasizes ambiguity. This thesis provides theoretical support for the further process of ECDA.Regarding methodology,it provides innovative value for corpus in-depth linguistic research. It provides favorable conditions for cultivating people’s critical reading ability and environmental protection awareness.
