A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of The Power Of Hope Guided By The Theory Of Communicative Translation

As globalization is gaining growing momentum,mutual translation of literary works is indispensable.Since biographical literature is both documentary and literary in nature,the translator,in translating biographical literature,acts as both a factual presenter and an artistic creator.So the translator should choose appropriate translation strategies in order to convey the ideas expressed in the original to the reader.The Power of Hope,which chronicles the journey of the American actress Kate’s family in their fight against the epidemic,is full of love and strength that resonates with each of us to a greater or lesser extent.I hope readers will gain love and strength from the book and gain the courage to fight against the challenges.Communicative translation is the translation theory proposed by the famous British translation theorist Peter·Newmark,which has greatly influenced the Western linguistic and translation communities.Communicative translation means that the effect of the translation on the target readers should be as much as possible equal to the effect of the original on the source readers of the original.The adoption of Newmark’s communicative translation theory can well solve the problems faced by the translation of biographies.For example,the translations are too naturalized,resulting in deviations from the original,and the differences caused by historical and cultural factors prevent the original and the translation from being equivalent.Colloquial language in the original is both a highlight and a difficulty.On the one hand,it can enhance readers’ interest in reading,but it also poses a challenge to the author,who needs to produce a translation suitable for readers’ reading habits in the target language on the basis of thinking transformation and context grasp.This report makes case analysis from the lexical and syntactic levels.At the lexical level,three translation strategies are adopted,namely ‘amplification’,‘omission’ and ‘conversion’,and at the syntactic level,three translation strategies are adopted,namely ‘voice conversion’,‘restructuring’ and ‘free translation’,so as to demonstrate the leading function of communicative translation theory in biographies translation.
