This report’s translation content comes from the first two chapters of Danielle Steel’s popular English novel Complications.The story follows many guests who stayed at the Louis XVI Hotel,which reopened after four years’ renovation.The goal of a popular novel is to arouse the strong interest of the general public,which necessitates the translator putting the target readers as the center and effectively conveying the source text information.The communicative translation holds that the understanding of the target readers should be the main focus.As a result,communicative translation can be applied to the translation of this popular fiction.In this report,the translator selects typical examples,compares and analyzes the translations before and after modification,and adopts corresponding translation strategies to translate them.First and foremost,the translator adopts semantic extension,conversion,free translation and four-character structures when it comes to vocabulary.Secondly,at the sentence level,the translator uses free amplification,division,voice conversion and combination.Finally,at the textual level,the translator chooses the strategies of reconstruction and cohesion.Using the above-mentioned translation techniques to improve the readability of the translated text and help the readers of the translated text get the same effective information as the readers of the original text,in order to achieve the best communicative effect,as guided by communicative translation theory.
