This is a translation report on the obstacles and approaches experienced by the translator in the translation of Discourse: The Basics(Chapters 4-6).This book systematically introduces the research of discourse analysis, which involves semiotics, rhetoric, metaphor and other fields. The book contains a large number of linguistic terms, idioms and polysemous words, and supplemented information with parentheses, which adds the difficulty of translation. At the same time, both the source text and target one are to convey research results and information to the recipient. And academic works are very formal with tight logic. In order to ensure the accurate transmission of academic ideas and improve its readability in target language, the translator adopts appropriate techniques to make the translation suitable for the target language’s expression habits. The report analyses and summarizes the translation practice of Discourse: The Basics(Chapters 4-6)taking Nord’s function plus loyalty theory as the framework. At the lexical level, there are many idioms, polysemous words, linguistic related terms in the source text.According to these characteristics, free translation, idiomatic translation, conventionality and so on are adopted,so as to solve the problem that technical terms are difficult to understand, and that polysemy expression is not accurate. At the syntactic level, there are many passive sentences, parentheses, long and difficult sentences in the source text.According to these characteristics, voice shifting, restructuring, division are adopted,so as to solve the problem that the sentences are difficult to understand or the sentence translated in the target language is not fluent. At the textual level, reference items and connection items are common in the source text.According to these characteristics, the translator will use omission, addition and literal translation to make the text smooth and natural. The report is divided into seven parts. The first part is the task description, including the project background, project significance and thesis structure. The second part is the translation process. The third part is the literature review, including domestic and foreign research on function plus loyalty theory. The fourth part is the theoretical basis, which introduces the guiding theory of translation“function plus loyalty”,and discusses the guidance of the function plus loyalty theory to the translation. The fifth part is about the characteristics of the original text, mainly from lexical, syntactic and textual level. The sixth part is an important part of this translation report, that is,case analysis.Based on the original text’s features, case analysis summarizes the translation techniques such as annotation, conventionality, addition, the shift of voice and omission respectively from the three levels of lexical, syntactic and textual level. The last part is the conclusion, which summarizes the reflections and the inadequacies of translation practice.
