This report is based on the C-E translation of the online novel,Reaching for the Stars.Written by the famous cyberspace writer,Lin Dier and published in 2012,the novel has not been translated into English yet.In this full-length web novel, many characters with complex relationships are involved, where the writer employed various literary devices and descriptive techniques to portray the characters in a vivid and humorous way.In Linguistic Aesthetics of Novels,Wu Lanling points out that character description is the central component of novel descriptions, and novel descriptions can be divided into frontal and side descriptions. In the current practice, frontal descriptions of characters’ appearance, actions, and dialogues,as well as side descriptions of surrounding environments, pose certain difficulties. Therefore, this report focuses the discussion on the translation of novels from the aspect of reproducing the image of characters.Under the guidance of Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Elegance, the translator analyzes and summarizes translation methods such as domestication, literal translation and free translation,as well as translation techniques such as amplification, omission and conversion to deal with the target text in relation to specific cases.Through this translation practice, the translator not only deepens her understanding of the translation of characters in online novels, but also improves her translation ability. The translator hopes that this report can provide some help or reference value to other translators when it comes to the translation of Chinese online novels.
