The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011)clearly states that language skills mainly include listening,speaking,reading and writing skills and the comprehensive application ability of these skills.As a skill of comprehension,listening skill is an important way for students to learn knowledge,acquire information,and improve their abilities.English learning in junior high school not only connects the English knowledge learned in elementary school,but also lays a solid foundation for senior high school English learning.Therefore,English listening teaching in junior high school is of great significance.In addition,the middle school English listening class is a good platform for students to acquire new knowledge,practice listening and speaking skills,and apply what they have learned.However,due to the pressure of exam-oriented education,most teachers adopt the traditional English listening teaching method.The mechanical drill makes students lose interest in learning English listening,and the boring input makes the classroom atmosphere stereotypical and rigid.Therefore,it is imperative for teachers to find a new way of English listening teaching.In response to the above-mentioned problems in English listening teaching at the present stage,experiential learning can provide some solutions.Experiential teaching refers to a teaching mode in which students acquire new knowledge and improve language ability in thematic situations and situational activities under the guidance of teachers.Based on experiential learning theory and constructivism learning theory,this research tries to answer the following three questions:(1)What effect does experiential teaching have on junior high school students’ English listening performance?(2)What are the effects of experiential teaching on junior high school students’ English listening learning effectiveness?(3)What’s the students’ feedback on the application of experiential teaching in junior high school English listening.In this research,two classes in a public school in Wuhan are selected as the experimental class and the control class.A four-month teaching experiment is conducted with 92 students.The experimental class is taught with experiential teaching and the control class is taught with traditional listening teaching method.After the experiment,SPSS 24.0 is used to analyze the test scores,questionnaires and interviews.The research results are as follows: first,the application of experiential teaching in junior high school English listening teaching can improve students’ listening performance;second,the application of experiential teaching in junior high school English listening teaching can improve students’ learning interest and learning attitude;third,students have a good feedback on the application of experiential teaching in junior high school English listening.In addition,implications to English teaching can be concluded from the research: first,teachers should have a deep understanding of experiential teaching;second,teachers should master the main line of situational activities in the process of applying experiential teaching;finally,teachers should focus on the cognitive and emotional needs of students.In conclusion,this study confirms the effectiveness of experiential teaching in English listening teaching in junior high schools.
