Since the start of "a Bite of China",Food documentaries from different parts of China are springing up through official media, online media and self-publishing platforms.Under the promotion of rural revitalization strategy, food documentaries tell the story of local food and show the food culture covering the meaning of "hometown" and "homeland",so that the connotation of Chinese local image is constantly enriched in different contexts. Therefore,Chinese food documentaries,as a humanities documentary genre, elaborate on the objective basis and context of the times according to the choice of the vernacular geography in which the food is located, thus having an impact on the shaping of cultural forms. At the same time,Chinese food documentaries are characterized by "small but big",and they carry the responsibility of "telling the Chinese story and spreading the Chinese voice" from food. Therefore, this study chooses to use the theoretical framework and cultural connotation of media geography to conduct a study on the vernacular image construction of Chinese food documentaries.Using the theory of media geography and several Chinese food documentaries as research samples, this study analyzes the current development of Chinese food documentaries and the problems of constructing vernacular images. It is found that the current construction of local images in China’s food documentaries has a single narrative subject and stereotypical image style, resulting in a lack of attractiveness and infectiousness in shaping local characteristics. After an in-depth analysis of the above issues, informative suggestions are made.Combining documentary analysis and textual analysis, this paper examines and discusses selected food documentaries from five basic concepts of media geography: space, time, landscape, place, and scale. It is mainly divided into the following parts;the first part is the introduction, which summarizes the content of the whole text and introduces the purpose, significance, innovation, research method and the structure of this thesis. The second part is a conceptual definition and research framework that explores the relationship between food documentaries and vernacular images. The third part is the diversified construction of vernacular images in Chinese food documentaries, analyzing the ways of constructing vernacular images in Chinese food documentaries and the specific images they present, mainly focusing on the spatial narrative of vernacular images in food documentaries, the image of vernacular landscape, the embodiment of vernacular era,the image of vernacular places, the image of vernacular groups, and the image of vernacular economy. The fourth part,Revelations on the construction of vernacular image under the media scale, summarizes and reflects on the communication of vernacular image as a whole from the two most important scales linking media and geography, local and global, and tries to illustrate the direction of constructing vernacular image in Chinese food documentaries,so as to tell the Chinese vernacular story and make more effective external communication. Finally, the conclusion section summarizes and concludes the thesis.
