In the context of Chinese culture “going global”,in December 2020,Taijiquan was included in the world’s intangible cultural heritage list,as a combination of sports and culture,Taijiquan further attracts the world’s attention. This translation practice report chooses Taijiquan Exercise Therapy: Theory and Practice as the translation task, and the translator participated in the initial translation. There is currently no other published English version for this text. The main content of the original work covers the overview, development history, characteristics, and illustrations of specific practices of Taijiquan exercise therapy, and contains a lot of classical Chinese and culture-loaded words. The target readers of this book are mainly foreign readers who are interested in Chinese Taiji culture.Since foreign readers have limited background knowledge of Taiji culture, the translator should regard foreign readers as the center of the translation process.Reception theory mainly expounds the relationship between the author, the work and the reader, emphasizing the significance of the reader’s reception, and meets the requirements that Taijiquan translation should focuse on foreign readers. Therefore, the translator chooses the reception theory as the guiding theory to solve problems encountered in this translation practice as well as the analysis report. How to meet the fusion of horizons between foreign readers and texts and broaden their expectation horizons are difficult points of this translation practice. In this regard, the translator will start from the “horizon of expectation” perspective,“reader-centered” perspective and “fusion of horizons”perspective of reception theory and analyze the source text by adopting translation strategies and translation methods such as amplification, translation compensation, and corresponding translation. From the perspective of the foreign readers, the translator strives to realize the fusion of the foreign readers’ and the translation’s horizons and tries to broaden their horizon expectations. This translation practice and the report analyze and discuss how reception theory could guide Taijiquan translation and the study of this kind of translation, hoping to provide reference for subsequent translation and researches.
