The translation practice is based on two academic articles on new sources of energy in the aviation field, namely “Comprehensive Investigation on Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology in the Aviation” and “Liquefied Natural Gas for Civil Aviation”.The two articles discuss the potential and challenges of hydrogen and natural gas as aviation fuels. Both articles are informative texts featured by a large amount of energy and aviation terminology. To improve the quality of scientific and technical term translation, the translator aims to apply the method of “looking for translation equivalents”.This is done through an exploration of the authoritative online platforms, whereby the specific techniques of looking for translation equivalents are summarized and discussed. This translation practice report illustrates how to look for equivalents when translating scientific and technological terminology on the new aviation energy from the professional literature of the target language,so as to achieve maximum equivalence in terms of conceptual meaning and pragmatic effect.First of all, based on previous studies, the translator proposes the principles of “being authoritative, being contextualized, being frequent, and being verifiable” to determine the target language terminology online.Second, the translator describes three steps when applying the method of “looking for equivalents”.The first step is to collect authoritative platforms and determine their order of use by the principle of “being authoritative”;the second step is to adopt the definition-based technique,picture-based technique,discipline-based technique and the collocation-based technique for different types of terminology by the principle of “being contextualized and frequent”;the third step is to verify the translation by the principle of “being verifiable”.Finally, the problems and shortcomings of this new method of term translation are discussed.
