A Study On C-E Translation Of Public Signs In Internal Sports Games From The Perspective Of Sociosemiotics

As an intuitive language symbol and a corpus with reminder,warning and publicity functions,public signs shoulder the mission of conveying information to the audience.Public signs are an indispensable part of urban construction.They are not only the embodiment of the city’s external communication level and cultural taste,but also the business card of the city’s external charm.Thus,the translation of public signs also plays a very important role in urban construction.After two postponements,the 31 st Chengdu World University Sports Games(WUGS)would be officially held in July 2023.With the number of international events which would run in Chengdu soon,the research on the Chinese public signs of the Chengdu WUGS and their translation corpus had a strong reference significance for the translation of public signs in international sports events.According to the theory of sociosemiotics,each sign was a part of the language system;additionally,through interviews with the staff of the Executive Committee of the Chengdu WUGS,the author asked questions about the translation of public signs for international sports events,and concluded that such public signs were symbols with social significance.Therefore,it was a valuable investigation and could be generalized into broader cases to investigate public signs in Chinese and their English counterparts in international sports events,from the view of sociosemiotics.This paper used the fieldwork method to collect the corpus of public signs in the31 st Chengdu WUGS during the past two years,including the test competition,in the form of photographs,and discussed whether the collected public signs and their translations achieve complete correspondence in designative meaning,linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning,from the perspective of sociosemiotics theory.The research found that:(1)the public signs of international sports events were texts with prominent referential meanings;(2)each public sign had at least one of the designative meaning,linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning,and some public signs had multiple above meanings;(3)The Chinese public signs and their translations were not completely equivalent in the three meanings.Based on the research findings and existing deficiencies,this paper put forward the following suggestions for the translation of public signs in international sports events:(1)when highlighting the referential meaning of public signs,use literal translation;(2)when highlighting the linguistic meaning of public signs,use loanword or transliteration techniques;(3)when highlighting the pragmatic meaning of public signs,free translation techniques could be used.At present,there is still room for improvement in the translation of public signs for the Chengdu WUGS.On the one hand,this topic was selected to attract the attention of government departments at all levels and staff involved in the translation of public signs for the Chengdu WUGS.On the other hand,it also provided a reference for further standardization of the translation of public signs for international sports events.
