| Since ancient times,paratexts have occupied an important position in translation studies,and also contain a lot of information including the author’s translation thoughts.In today’s society,the field of translation has gradually become a hot topic in the study of paratexts,but it focuses on literary translation,translation ideas and translation theories.There is very little research on paratexts of sports translation,which shows that there is a big gap in this field.The English version of Chinese Health Qigong: Ba Duan Jin was organized and edited by the Fitness Qigong Management Center of the State General Administration of Sport.It was edited by many experts and scholars from Beijing Sport University and Shanghai University of Sport,as well as many professional scholars engaged in traditional Chinese medicine.After a long period of material collection,on-the-spot communication and study with the inheritors,they summarized the different schools of Ba Duan Jin,combined with the characteristics of the present era and conformed to the trend of the times,and finally compiled Chinese Health Qigong: Ba Duan Jin.On the basis of the original eight Routines,the Ready Position and Closing Form are added,which fully takes into account the needs of readers and faithfully restores the original style of Ba Duan Jin,so its English version is also very authoritative and worth learning.Ba Duan Jin,as a traditional exercise method in China,has a long history and has attracted more and more attention.Even during the epidemic,patients in the mobile cabin hospital used Ba Duan Jin to keep fit,which became a hot topic on the Internet.However,at present,the research on Ba Duan Jin mainly focuses on its non-drug therapy and its fitness efficacy,and there are few studies on the sports translation books covering Ba Duan Jin.So study on this kind of sports is also a research blank.The English version is highly instructive,aiming at helping people learn the eight Routines.Therefore,there are many paratexts,such as notes,illustrations and videos.It is very valuable to study the paratexts of this book.This paper first sorts out the general functions of the paratext through reading and summarizing a large number of documents,and then applies it to the English version of Chinese Health Qigong: Ba Duan Jin according to local conditions to study its paratext.The findings are as follows:(1)The English version is rich in internal and external paratext,but there are some differences with the original paratext,and the description focuses are different,which is mainly due to the differences in readers’ reading expectations;(2)The function of the paratext in the English version is well realized,which reflects the translator’s translation strategy,helps to construct the traditional sports image of China,promotes readers’ understanding and acceptance,and effectively participates in the construction of the meaning of the text;(3)There are still some shortcomings in the English version of the paratext,which are mainly reflected in the fact that the annotations of traditional documents are too rough,the arrangement of acupoint maps is too concise,and the action illustrations lack the comparison between right and wrong.(4)The study of the English version of Chinese Health Qigong: Ba Duan Jin has certain enlightenment to the construction of the English translation of sports books.Based on the research findings and shortcomings,the paper suggests that in the future,the research and writing of the paratext of sports translation books should be based on the function of the paratext and combined with the characteristics of the books,be brave in innovation,and explore the significance of the paratext to the construction of China sports image and the spread of Chinese culture.At the same time,we should pay attention to the balance between the internal paratext and the external paratext,and make full use of the opportunities brought by the current network and new media to realize the significance of sports text translation more effectively. |
