| In the wave of globalisation,countries(regions) are increasingly focusing on the development of theoretical and practical research on international understanding education,and are constantly exploring the presentation and use of international understanding education content in textbooks.The Longman English textbooks for primary schools in Hong Kong are designed in accordance with the English Language Curriculum Guide,with a strong focus on authentic language use and a wide range of coverage.The textbooks are both ’instrumental’ and ’humanistic’ in nature and are effective in enhancing students’ international understanding and developing critical thinking skills.Therefore,there is value in studying international understanding education in the context of the Hong Kong Longman edition of primary English textbooks.This paper uses documentary research,content analysis and comparative research to analyse the presentation of international understanding education in the Hong Kong Longman edition of primary school English textbooks,and to summarise its strengths and weaknesses.The paper is divided into six sections.The first part is the introduction,which includes the reason for choosing the topic,the purpose of the study,the definition of concepts,the literature review,the research methodology and the research ideas.The first part of the main text is devoted to the theories that underpin this study,including theories related to the content of international understanding education and theories related to the content of English textbooks.The second part summarises the philosophy and principles of presenting international understanding content in Longman English textbooks based on the curriculum guidelines.The third section uses the International Understanding Content Analysis Framework to present and analyse the international understanding content in the Longman Primary English textbooks in a holistic and thematic manner.The fourth section builds on the previous section and identifies and organises the remaining strengths and weaknesses of the international understanding content in the Longman edition of the primary English textbooks.The last part of the paper summarises the features and flaws of the international understanding content in this textbook,with a view to drawing lessons for the compilation of international understanding content in mainland English textbooks. |
