The Effects Of Component Transposition And Predictability On Chinese Readin

The transposed-letter effect is when transposing two internal letters of a word is less intrusive than replacing them with other letters.The transposed-letter effect found in the study of alphabetic reading studies indicates that the processing of letters’ position is flexible.It is consistent with the results of alphabetic reading studies that there are stable morpheme-based transposed effects in Chinese reading.In the process of reading,when bottom-up perceptual information can’t provide enough information,readers may rely on top-down contextual information to help them process reading.It was found in both alphabetic reading and Chinese reading that predictability plays a moderating role in the transposed effect.The study of transposed effect in alphabetic reading is based on the letter level,while Chinese is focused on the morpheme level.However,as the basic unit of Chinese character recognition,there is no research on the transposition of radical level.There are many ways to form Chinese characters between the radicals.The combination of left and right structures provides the possibility to explore the transposed effect of radical levels.Therefore,how does radical transpose in single-character words and double-character words affect Chinese reading,and does predictability play a moderating role? These are a series of questions that this study aims to explore.The Eyelink 1000 plus was used to investigate the problems.In experiment 1,39 participants were selected,and manipulated the preview types(identity preview,transposed preview,control preview)of the target words with the left and right structure as the target words.The results showed that the fixation times were longer and the skip rate was lower under transposed and control conditions than under identity conditions.The fixation times were longer and the skip rate was lower under the control condition than under the transposed condition.In experiment 2,48 college students were selected,single-character words with left and right structure as the target words.The experimental design of 2(predictive: high,low)× 3(preview type: identity,transposed,control)was used to investigate how predictability and radical transpose in single-character words affect Chinese reading,the results found stable predictability effect and radical transposed effect,predictability didn’t moderate the radical transposed effect.In experiment 3,48 college students were selected,double-character words with left and right structure as the target words.The experimental design of 2(predictive: high,low)× 3(preview type: identity,transposed,control)was used to investigate how predictability and radical transpose in double-character word affect Chinese reading,the results found stable predictability effect and radical transposed effect,word predictability moderated the size of the transposed effects.Based on the above experimental results,the following conclusions were obtained:(1)There is the radical transposed effect between the single-character words in Chinese reading.(2)Predictability and radical transposed between single-character words play independent roles in Chinese reading.(3)There is a stable radical transposed effect between double-character words in Chinese reading,and predictability moderates the size of the transposed effects.
