Emotion regulation has received increasing attention from researchers as one of the topical studies.Research on emotion regulation is very diverse and includes studies on emotion regulation strategies, emotion regulation self-efficacy,emotion regulation flexibility, and many others. On the other hand, emotion regulation is a way to monitor and adjust behavior, and it involves brain regions that overlap with cognitive control, and there is a strong connection between the two. However, previous research on cognitive control has mostly been measured using tasks such as working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. In recent years, researchers have introduced the concept of cognitive control capacity based on the information theory of cognitive control, which can be described digitally and quantitatively for cognitive control, and researchers have designed most functional tasks to measure this capacity. An individual’s cognitive control capacity reflects the highest limit of his or her information processing rate, and the higher the cognitive control capacity of an individual, the better his or her cognitive control ability.Based on this, this dissertation will explore the differences in emotion regulation between individuals with high and low cognitive control capacities, and systematically analyze the propensity, effectiveness, and flexibility of emotion regulation in individuals with different cognitive control capacities through three studies.Study 1 explored the differences in emotion regulation disposition dimensions between individuals with high and low cognitive control capacities.A total of 96 subjects were recruited to participate in this experiment. The cognitive control capacity of the subjects was first measured by a backward masking majority function task, and then the subjects were divided into a high cognitive control capacity group(first 33%)and a low cognitive control capacity group(second 33%),and a total of 64 valid subjects were screened.Next, the subjects completed the Daily Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for College Students. The results revealed that(1)individuals with high cognitive control capacity used cognitive reappraisal strategies and expression inhibition strategies significantly more frequently than those with low cognitive control capacity.(2)In regulating positive emotions, the frequency of using cognitive reappraisal strategies was significantly higher in individuals with high cognitive control capacity than in individuals with low cognitive control capacity, and the frequency of using cognitive immersion and expressive catharsis strategies was significantly higher in individuals with low cognitive control capacity than in individuals with high cognitive control capacity.(3)In regulating negative emotions, individuals with high cognitive control capacity used the inhibition strategy significantly more frequently than those with low cognitive control capacity. It was hypothesized that individuals with high cognitive control capacity might have stronger emotion control ability than those with low cognitive control capacity,as they were more likely to use cognitive reappraisal and expression inhibition strategies to reduce emotional feelings.Study 2 explored differences in the effectiveness dimensions of emotion regulation between individuals with high and low cognitive control capacities. In Study 2,subjects were asked to complete the Emotion Regulation Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. The results showed that individuals with high cognitive control capacity were significantly more effective in regulating depressed and distressed emotions than those with low cognitive control capacity, which indicates that individuals with high cognitive control capacity have stronger self-efficacy in regulating negative emotions.Study 3 explored the differences in the flexibility dimension of emotion regulation between individuals with high and low cognitive control capacities. In Study 3,subjects were asked to complete an emotion regulation task selection experiment, and the results revealed that(1)individuals in the high cognitive control capacity group were able to perform flexible emotion regulation under different intensity negative stimulus conditions.(2)In the high-intensity negative stimulus condition, the high cognitive control group was able to use multiple emotion regulation strategies more flexibly. In conclusion, individuals with high cognitive control capacity have stronger emotion regulation ability than those with low cognitive control capacity.Individuals with high cognitive control capacity were able to regulate negative emotions more effectively and flexibly.
