| Reading and writing are two most essential skills of English learning for high school students,thus relevant research has become the hot topic in the academia in recent years.This study explores the effect of POA on high school students’ reading and writing skills by applying it to the teaching of integrated English reading and writing in high school to answer the following three research questions: 1)What is the effect of applying POA to English integrated reading and writing instruction in Senior high school on students’ reading comprehension? 2)What is the effect of applying POA to English integrated reading and writing instruction in Senior high school on students’ writing performance? 3)What changes have occurred in students’ understanding of reading and writing after applying POA to English integrated reading and writing instruction in Senior high school?The study was conducted in two parallel classes of a high school in Tianjin,China,with a total of 90 students in the second year of senior high school.The two classes were taught for one semester,with the experimental class using POA and the control class using separate reading and writing instruction.The study used tests and interviews to collect data.Pre-test and post-test scores were analyzed by SPSS for data,and interview results with six students randomly selected and teachers were transcribed and analyzed to understand students’ understandings of reading and writing integration.The results showed that POA had positive impact on students’ reading comprehension and writing performance.The students’ reading comprehension level improved significantly.They were not only able to read the topic requirements,find the topic sentence and summarize the main idea of the text,but also to analyze the text structure and explore the deeper meaning of the text.Students’ writing performance also improved significantly.They made significant progress in generalization ability,summarization level and logical thinking.More importantly,students’ understandings of integrated teaching of reading and writing became clearer and deeper during the learning process,overcoming their fears and building their confidence in reading and writing,which laid a solid emotional foundation for their future English learning. |
