English speaking anxiety can easily appear when students are having English classes, and it has traditionally been seen as a weak spot in junior middle school English instruction. At present, there are relatively few studies on primary and middle school students’ oral English anxiety, and most of the research objects are college students. The oral English test has just been included to the high school entrance exam, emphasizing the importance of spoken English. As a result,k nowing the level of junior high students’ oral anxiety, investigating the reasons of students’ oral anxiety, and determining strategies to ameliorate students’ oral anxiety are all required.Affective Filtering Hypothesis,Humanistic Psychology Theory, and Face Theory are all used to support this thesis.Taking 176 students in grade two of Changsha foreign language school as the questionnaire survey participants. And 9students and 3 teachers were interviewed and observed in class. The main purpose is to study the following problems: 1)What is the anxiety level of junior high school students’ oral English ? 2)What causes anxiety in junior high school students? 3)How can junior high school students ameliorate their anxiety of speaking English?Based on the results of questionnaire survey, classroom observations, and interviews, the author comes to three conclusions.1)Anxiety about speaking English is pervasive among junior middle school students. The majority of junior middle school students experience medium anxiety when speaking English.2)Based on the results of the questionnaire, the primary causes of spoken English anxiety in junior middle school students are teacher reasons, classroom reasons, and student reasons. These three factors all have an effect on students’ spoken English anxiety to some degree.3)We can reduce junior middle school students’ oral English anxiety mainly from two aspects: teachers and students. For one thing, teachers ought to provide students with more constructive feedback and assessment,as well as encourage them to speak English and guard their self-esteem.For another, students should conquer their anxiety of speaking English in class.Don’t miss the opportunity to help improve oral English in class, accept the opinions and guidance of teachers and students, and take the initiative to create opportunities to speak English after class. The goal of this study is to assist students in overcoming their oral English anxiety and improving their oral English level,as well as to se rve as a resource for future research.
