In this study,the Student-centered and Autonomous Teaching approach(ScATA)is defined as a new teaching approach that considers students’ needs to know and what methods will be most effective in facilitating learning for individual learning.Beimen middle school introduces this teaching approach into their teaching,putting students in the center place and makings them imitative in the class.This study aims to evaluate the application of the ScATA in Beimen Middle school and the impact on students’ English reading performance.Research questions are as follows:(1)How do students’ reading scores change over the one-year application of ScATA?(2)How do students’ self-efficacy,interest,cooperative learning,autonomous learning change over the one-year application of ScATA?(3)How do students reading performances differ between students with and without ScATA?This study adopts mixed methods and collects data through questionnaires,interviews,and tests.The samples came from two classes of different grades in Beimen Middle School to ensure the validity and rigor of the final data,a second-grade class of another local middle school at the same level as Beimen Middle School was selected as a reference.The reasons why the author uses two different grades for comparison are as follows: Firstly,the mode has been used in Beimen Middle School for nearly ten years,and all classes use this mode,therefore,it is difficult to choose a control group.Secondly,in Language Testing,many scholars have used this sampling strategy and have obtained positive survey results.The research uses statistical tools to analyze the questionnaire results,interview results and testing results.The results show that students’ reading scores have improved significantly after using this teaching approach for one year;there is a significant improvement in autonomous learning and cooperative learning ability;students who had used the teaching approach for a year had higher reading scores than those who had not.It shows that the “Student-centered and Autonomous” teaching approach can improve students’ reading performances,and also significantly improve students’ learning interest,self-efficacy,autonomous learning ability and cooperative learning ability.To this finding,this kind of teaching approach can be used in English reading teaching in senior high school,it can arouse students’ interest,improve students’ autonomous learning and cooperative learning ability.It is feasible in the further English reading teaching.
