Speech interruptions are very common in conversational communication.Speech interruption is an important speech act to promote turn-taking,but there are few research results on speech interruption from the perspective of institutional conversation, and the research on the phenomenon of "speech interruption" from the perspective of international Chinese language education is not deep enough.Through a review of the existing studies,we find that the current research on this issue has a narrow perspective and there are many problems in the research methods. This paper attempts to study the phenomenon of speech interruptions in institutional conversations among international students based on the rules of turn-taking and conversation analysis theories, with the help of relevant research results on the phenomenon of speech interruptions, and by means of quantitative analysis. This paper mainly selects 20 episodes of Informal Talks(Season 7)for corpus transcription, and focuses on the distribution, types and characteristics of the speech interruption phenomenon in them, and conducts quantitative analysis from the perspectives of interruption motivation, interruption mode, interruption position and participants’ reactions. In addition, the similarities and differences between the speech interruptions of Chinese learners and native Chinese speakers are compared, with a view to proposing appropriate and effective interruption strategies in conversation, and providing some theoretical guidance and practical reference for the teaching of oral language in international Chinese education. The first part of the article is divided into two parts: the first part is the introduction, which explains the background of the topic, the purpose and significance of the research, the research object, the research method, and the transcription of the corpus;the research history and the research results of "Informal Talks" and the phenomenon of speech interruption from both domestic and foreign countries are organized. In the second part, the theories related to institutional conversation are sorted out, mainly including the main characteristics and realization mechanism of institutional conversation;based on the theory of institutional conversation proposed by Drew and Heritage, the deductive method is applied to detail the characteristics of institutional conversation in Informal Talks(Season 7)from four aspects: the design of the conversation wheel, the organization of the sequence, the overall structure and the social relationship between the identities of the two parties. The third part is based on the theory of conversation analysis and the social relations between the two parties. In the third part,we define and classify the speech interruptions based on the theory of conversation analysis and the theory of handover rules. For example, the most frequent use of non-verbal behavior to refuse interruptions may be due to the limited level of spoken Chinese of second language learners or the rich body language of foreigners. In the fourth part, the interrupting behaviors of Chinese learners and native Chinese speakers in the program are compared in terms of interrupting mode and interrupting position, and the same conclusions are drawn.Based on the results of the analysis,we propose insights and suggestions, including how to choose the timing of interruptions, strategies of interruptions and pay attention to cross-cultural conflicts during the conversation process. The aim is to provide further theoretical and practical guidance for the teaching of oral language in international Chinese education.
