During the late Qing Dynasty, when Chinese and Western cultures collided and mingled, the newspaper industry emerged. In 1895,an article entitled "On the Illustrated Newspaper as a Way to Enlighten the People" was published in the newspaper "Xuan Xuan",which argued that not everyone could read the newspaper as most people in China were illiterate, and advocated the establishment of an illustrated newspaper. In June 1902,Peng Yizhong founded the Enlightenment Pictorial Newspaper in Beijing, which was aimed at children who could not read or write, and used pictorial narratives to convey knowledge to children in a vivid and visual way. This paper focuses on the design of children’s images in The Enlightenment Pictorial, based on The Enlightenment Pictorial itself and relevant materials, and analyses the design features of children’s images in The Enlightenment Pictorial through a series of relevant research methods such as data collection, literature research and comparative analysis. The main text is divided into five main sections, the first of which introduces a general overview of the late Qing pictorial press in the context of the interweaving of tradition and modernity, and analyses the changing image of children in the late Qing pictorial press in the context of the times. The second chapter provides an overview of the Enlightenment Pictorials of the late Qing Dynasty and analyses their positioning in late Qing society. The third chapter focuses on the design of children’s images in the Enlightenment Illustrated Newspaper, firstly from the perspective of the design themes of children’s illustrations and the overall style of children’s illustrations, and then specifically on the design of children’s images in the Enlightenment Illustrated Newspaper, which focused on illustration design.Secondly,as a newspaper that is truly concerned with the education and destiny of children and has a large readership of children, this chapter also analyses the impact of the graphic design on children’s aesthetic psychology. The fourth chapter compares the images of children in Enlightenment Pictorial with those in other pictorial newspapers of the same period, such as the Mengxue Newspaper and the Children’s Monthly, and concludes that the design of the images of children in Enlightenment Pictorial was unique. The fifth chapter analyses the impact and influence of the images of children in Enlightenment Pictorial on the society of the late Qing Dynasty from two aspects: promoting the changes in the enlightenment education of children in the Republic of China in the late Qing Dynasty and promoting the layout design of the late Qing pictorial newspapers. It is clear from this research that the Enlightenment Illustrated was a very influential publication in society at the time, and that the children’s designs were representative of both advanced Western cultural thinking and localised cultural heritage. The design of the children’s images is representative of both the advanced Western cultural thinking and the localised cultural heritage of the time, and is a symptom of the social progress of the time. This paper hopes to contribute to the study of the design of children’s images in the Enlightenment Pictorial and the late Qing dynasty pictorials,as well as to the study of the design history of the pictorials of the late Qing dynasty.
