Disaster film is an important type of film.Its emergence and development are closely related to the development and progress of film technology.The two encourage each other and form a benign interactive mechanism in the long course of film development.Thanks to the development of film digital technology,disaster films became the main type of Hollywood films in the 1990 s,and a number of disaster films such as Independence Day,Titanic and Armageddon were born.It has gained huge box office around the world and set off a wave of disaster movies,which have become the object of global audiences’ enthusiasm.At the same time,the Hollywood disaster movies glorifies the universal concept and freedom value of the United States,highlighting the strength and global dominance of the United States both inside and outside the movie,and undoubtedly becoming a sharp tool for the expansion of American culture.In contrast,the development of Chinese disaster movies is slow and tortuous.Although it has a long history,the backwardness of film technology and the realistic tradition of Chinese film based on life,especially the rejection of disaster image after the founding of the People’s Republic of China,the disaster film in China has been lukewarm for a long time.In the 1980 s,with the opening up of the policy,the atmosphere of film creation gradually changed,and the advent of the entertainment film trend further promoted the prosperity of various types of films.In the late 1990 s,Chinese disaster movies finally connected with Hollywood,and Emergency Landing was a successful work that borrowed from it.Since the new century,Chinese disaster movies have experienced the development process of genre,from mainstream disaster movies to ethical disaster movies and then to "new mainstream" disaster movies,and finally formed a unique and mature disaster movies in China.This paper is to clarify the phenomenon of "new mainstream" disaster movies,trace back its development context,and analyze its type characteristics with typology.It is confirmed that it is a mature film genre through the type paradigm and elements,and then the value of its type construction is discussed.This article is divided into four parts.The first part is the introduction."New mainstream film","Chinese disaster film" and "Chinese genre film" are three aspects related to the research of "new mainstream" disaster film.This part summarizes and analyzes the research status of these three aspects by combing relevant literature,so as to clarify the author’s research direction and innovation of "new mainstream" disaster film.At the same time,these literature review also plays a good guiding and auxiliary role in the study of "new mainstream" disaster movies.The second part mainly describes the phenomenon of "new mainstream" disaster movie since the new century.Firstly,the concept of "new mainstream" disaster movie is clearly defined.Secondly,it shows that this phenomenon does not come out of nowhere,but has internal and external two lines of formation.The external one is the overall context,which has experienced the development process from "theme film" to "mainstream film" and then to "new mainstream blockbuster".In particular,the maturity of the special forces hero film genre in this context provides rich experience for the "new mainstream" disaster film.The inner one is the development of China’s disaster film itself from "pre-millennium disaster film" to "mainstream disaster film" to "ethical disaster film" and then to "new mainstream" disaster film,revealing that it was not until the "new mainstream" disaster film that a truly mature disaster film type was formed.These two threads together explain the emergence of the "new mainstream" disaster movie phenomenon.The third part explains why the "new mainstream" disaster movie is called the mature type."Disaster" and "lone hero",as the core elements of the "new mainstream" disaster movie,are the key points supporting the establishment of its type.This point is demonstrated through three clear and fixed type procedures: "disaster performance","lone hero fighting disaster and saving" and "transformation from ordinary people to heroes".The fourth part expounds the value of the "new mainstream" disaster film genre construction from three aspects: "national commercial type film system pattern","mainstream value" and "global film competition".By confirming the value of the "new mainstream" disaster film,the necessity of its existence and the possibility of its continued development are proved.Thus,it can be seen that the "new mainstream" disaster movie has already formed a disaster movie type with Chinese characteristics,whose genre program is mature and type elements are rich enough.The purpose of this paper is to reveal the commonality of "new mainstream" disaster movie to prove its genre.It is hoped that this genre can have more output in the future,further form the main trend leading the new mainstream film,gain more recognition,and inspire the generation of more film genres in the new mainstream context.
