Since the 1980 s,the carnival theory has been closely linked with the popular culture as the mainstream discourse of the contemporary era.Until today,the carnival theory has been used for reference by more and more academic fields and permeated into all aspects of the humanities and social science research.Since his debut at the age of 30,British director Guy Ritchie has successively shot 12 film works.If the public’s subversion,venting,irrationality,equality and joy are the essence of carnival,then this essence is the same as the expression content and spiritual core of Guy Ritchie’s films-he uses carnival art to show the sharp contradictions in modern society and the spiritual wasteland of modern people’s center,Deconstructing the traditional impression of the public on the film,prompting film writers to explore more stylized.Today’s Guy Ritchie still maintains a high degree of creative enthusiasm and vitality.His unique understanding and creation of films make his films lead the British box office and make new records.Looking back on his film career,the entertainment elements and carnival characteristics of Guy Ritchie’s films are everywhere.Therefore,by exploring the carnival characteristics of Guy Ritchie’s films,we can enrich the research on the carnival turn of film theory,and provide thinking for the creation and development of current films.This paper selects four films with the most carnival characteristics created by director Guy Ritchie in different periods-Two Smoking Guns(1998),Stealing and Robbing(2000),Rock Gangs(2008)and Gentlemen(2019)as the main research objects,and other works of director Guy Ritchie as the secondary research objects,introducing the "carnival theory" into Guy Ritchie’s film research,This paper discusses the collection and selection of carnival in Guy Ritchie’s films.The thesis is divided into three parts: In the first chapter,the author first introduces the development and extension of carnival theory,then summarizes the concept,essence and definition of carnival characteristics cited in this paper,and finally focuses on the growth experience and career of director Guy Ritchie in the British social culture and era background,so as to find out how carnival theory has become a part of the creative consciousness of director Guy Ritchie imperceptibly,How does Guy Ritchie show carnival characteristics in his different types of movies.The second chapter is the key chapter of this paper.Combined with Guy Ritchie’s film works,it focuses on analyzing the carnival characteristics in film elements,themes,narratives,characters,and audio-visual language,and makes specific and detailed sorting and induction.The third chapter summarizes the artistic influence brought by the carnival style of his films from two different perspectives: the post-modern style films in the world and the director’s creation in China,with a view to exploring the value of Guy Ritchie’s films from another dimension.Finally,it summarizes the full text,and combines the carnival characteristics of Guy Ritchie’s films to explore the practical significance of his films in contemporary society from a developmental perspective,as well as more relevance between carnival theory and film art.
