relationship between luck and human good life.Even though the issue of moral luck put forward by Williams has indeed caused heated debate on the issue of luck in the academic circle for a period of time, the controversy is still only concentrated within the framework of the moral code of conduct, and with the increasingly prominent dominance of rationalism, the ethical value of luck,a realistic element outside the control of human reason, has been increasingly ignored by the mainstream thought in the academic circle. This also reflects a problem existing in contemporary moral philosophy research, that is,the distance between moral theory and life reality is becoming more and more remote.Nasbaum noticed this problem and tried to refute the contemporary mainstream ethics-Kant school through the ideological resources of ancient Greece, calling on people to return to the vision of good life in ancient Greece and pay attention to the idea of luck contained therein.Phenomenon is the limit of Aristotle’s ethical research, and also the foundation of Aristotle’s luck thought in Nasbaum’s interpretation.Phenomenon endows luck with important ethical value.Nasbaum pointed out that in Aristotle’s view, all ethical theories that violate phenomena are not feasible, such as the philosophy of craftsmanship that Plato tried to establish. Some ancient Greek philosophers, like modern moral philosophy thinkers, have the ambition to get rid of the influence of luck through reason. But Nasbaum revealed that the vulnerability caused by luck in human good life is inevitable by exploring the contents of Aristotle’s thoughts about human nature and human activities. On the one hand, the animality and relationship in human nature determine that human beings are not self-sufficient.This kind of self-sufficiency makes people pursue the value of external things, which are often under the influence of luck, such as friendship and political activities; On the other hand,a good life refers to a life with virtue, and virtue cannot only exist in the state of possession.Only by practicing virtue can people enjoy a good life, and these human activities facing the outside world, even the whole process of virtue itself from cultivation to development, are exposed to the influence of luck.Nasbaum pointed out that in Aristotle’s view, ignoring luck is not only a violation of the phenomenon, but also makes us pay a huge price. If we want to achieve the complete control of life by reason,we will lose the important ethical value of those external things. Therefore,in this sense, luck itself has important ethical value.Nasbaum believed that Aristotle’s practical meditation was the right way for human beings to face luck, because it not only faced up to luck, but also played a cognitive role in emotion, which could make people enjoy the full value of a good life as much as possible.Nasbaum’s interpretation is of positive significance to the study of contemporary ethics in both content and method. She established a strong correlation between Aristotle’s philosophical works and the tragic works of ancient Greece, and combined with contemporary ethical research, she reconstructed Aristotle’s ethical thoughts. This research method, which combines literature and philosophy, ancient Greek perspective and contemporary ethics perspective, has positive significance for contemporary ethics research. In terms of content, many important issues involved in Nasbaum’s interpretation have played a certain role in promoting contemporary research.Nasbaum’s interpretation of Aristotle’s idea of luck is undoubtedly a bold and innovative attempt. She uses luck as a clue to connect the connotation of Aristotle’s idea of good life, and shows the complex tension contained therein. But at the same time,we should also recognize that her interpretation is a reconstructive interpretation starting from the study of contemporary issues.Due to the differences in context and research perspective, its interpretation is to some extent different from the original intention of Aristotle’s text,so it is necessary to examine its interpretation. This paper divides this review into two parts: strong interpretation and weak interpretation,in order to more clearly show the gap and correlation between Nasbaum’s interpretation and the original intention of Aristotle’s text, which will help us to more objectively view the supporting role of Aristotle’s text on Nasbaum’s thought, and thus more profoundly understand the positive significance and limitations of Nasbaum’s interpretation. | |
