The Effect Of Parental Phubbing On Adolescents’ Depression

The prevalence of depression among adolescents is increasing,which seriously affects the physical and mental development of individuals.Many studies have shown that family environment factors are significantly related to adolescents’ depression,which makes parental phubing a new perspective to explore the occurrence and development of adolescents’ depression.parental phubbing refers to the phenomenon that in the family environment,parents bend their heads to use mobile phones and ignore face-to-face communication with children,making children feel neglected by their parents.At present,there are few researches on the influence of parental phubbing on adolescents’ depression and its internal mechanism.Based on the parental accept-rejection theory,evaluation-coping theory and situation-process-outcome model,this study constructed a moderated chain mediation model to examine the mediating effects of core self-evaluation and negative coping on parental phubing and adolescents’ depression,as well as the moderating effects of psychological capital and gender.A total of 1579 adolescents from Luliang City of Shanxi Province,Kaifeng city of Henan Province and Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province were investigated by using parental phubbing questionnaire,Core Self-assessment Scale,Simple Coping style Scale,Psychological capital Scale and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.Data were analyzed by SPSS25.0and Mplus8.3.The results are as follows: the structural equation model shows that(1)parental phubbing can significantly positively predict adolescents’ depression;(2)Core self-evaluation and negative coping play a mediating role between parental phubbing and adolescents’ depression,and the mediating role includes three pathways: independent mediating role of core self-evaluation,independent mediating role of negative coping,and multiple mediating role of core self-evaluation and negative coping;(3)The latent regulatory structural equation model shows that psychological capital can regulate the relationship between parental phubbing and adolescents’ depression,and between core self-evaluation and adolescents’ depression.(4)The group comparison of the mediation model indicated gender differences in the negative predictor of core self-evaluation on adolescents’ depression and a greater effect in the female group;The positive correlation between negative coping and adolescents’ depression was greater in the male group than the female group.This study systematically expounds the influence of parents bow behavior on adolescent depression,and for the first time analyzed the core self-evaluation and negative coping in the multiple mediation effect between parents bow behavior and adolescent depression,further examines the regulation of psychological capital and gender in which,not only helps to improve the interpretation of theoretical model,but also provides scientific guidance for the targeted intervention program.
