| Miyazawa Kenji and Ogawa Mimei are both famous Japanese fairy tale writers.This thesis investigates the colour words in 55 fairy tales by Miyazawa Kenji and 179 fairy tales by Ogawa Mimei,and uses qualitative,quantitative and comparative analysis to investigate and analyse the colour words in Kenji’s and Mimei’s fairy tales,and draws the following conclusions.Mimei’s fairy tales employ colour words more frequently than Kenji’s works.On the other hand,Kenji’s colour tokens are more vibrant than Mimei’s.The standardized frequency of blue,red and white colour words in the works of Kenji and Mimei is among the highest three.Kenji frequently uses colour words with different epithets for words of the same phonetic form,whereas Mimei never uses colour words with different epithets.Kenji employs colour words for all colour systems,whereas Mimei lacks brown colour words.All the colour words semantically point to the noun.In kenji’s and Mimei’s fairy tales,colour words most frequently refer to nouns in the "productions and tools" and "natural objects and natural phenomena" categories.When colour words semantically point to the "abstract relations" category,Kenji uses these colour words more frequently than Mimei.The lexical dispersion is greater than in the works of Mimei.The consistency of word usage in Kenji’s and Mimei’s works is comparable when the semantic meaning of colour words refers to the category "subjects of human activity".It is difficult for colour words to co-occur with words from "Human activity-mental and behavioral".Mimei uses colour words more frequently than Kenji when referring to the "productions and tools" and "natural objects and natural phenomena" categories of vocabulary,Moreover,the lexical diversity is greater than in the works of Kenj.The authors’ natural surroundings and experiences primarily influence their use of colour words in their fairy tales. |
