As one of the important sources of ideas for many policies of governments, think tanks play a very important role in national development strategies. As a world power, the U.S.needs the intellectual, technical, and professional support from its think tanks in formulating national policies. As a more authoritative think tank in the United States, the research on China-Vietnam relations by U.S.think tanks has an important role in the U.S.government’s formulation of corresponding policies on China and Vietnam.By using quantitative analysis and textual analysis, this paper selects 15 top think tanks from the U.S.think tank rankings released by the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 and screens their research reports and articles on China-Vietnam relations since the 21 st century, and compares and analyzes the trends, changes and influencing factors of U.S.think tanks’ research on China-Vietnam relations. It also provides a specific analysis of the temporal changes in individual areas and topics, and provides an interpretation of Sino-Vietnamese relations from a third-party research perspective. This thesis focuses on the study of U.S.think tanks on China-Vietnam relations in the 21 st century, divided into three parts: changes in U.S.think tanks’ research on China-Vietnam relations,China-Vietnam relations in the eyes of U.S.think tanks, and factors influencing U.S.think tanks’ views on China-Vietnam relations.First, the author conducts a statistical analysis of the research reports and articles of U.S.think tanks on China-Vietnam relations in terms of time and content, analyzes their overall trends and development in terms of number, year, issues of concern and attitudes, and obtains nine hot topics of their research on China-Vietnam relations, and concludes that the attitudes of U.S.think tanks on China-Vietnam are mixed with neutral and negative, but generally leaning toward negative.Secondly, based on the research reports of the U.S.think tanks, the nine hot issues of China-Vietnam trade,South China Sea,regional security,China-Vietnam diplomacy,ASEAN issues, military security, energy issues,Belt and Road and climate change are classified into three areas of politics, economy and diplomacy, and are analyzed in depth in order to find out the true views of the U.S.think tanks on China-Vietnam relations in the light of the actual situation of China and Vietnam. Finally, the factors affecting the U.S.think tanks’ views on China-Vietnam relations are divided into economic interests, historical and cultural factors, geopolitical factors, and ideological factors in the context of U.S.strategic intentions and foreign policies, and the geopolitical, cultural, and ideological conditions of China, the U.S.,and Vietnam are described respectively. The conclusion is that China and Vietnam must face up to their problems and differences, improve understanding, enhance political mutual trust, and actively resolve their differences.
