Throughout his life,Mu Dan has been exploring the development of Chinese new poetry in multiple dimensions, which has also made his poetry creation process show obvious evolution. This article will take Mu Dan’s poetry works as the cornerstone, combined with Mu Dan’s biographical materials and research literature,to comprehensively sort out the evolution of Mu Dan’s poetry from three dimensions of form, emotion, and content, and explore its internal reasons. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter analyzes the transformation of Mu Dan’s poetry form and its reasons. The form is specifically explored from three aspects: language, image, and style. In terms of language,Mu Dan abandoned classical Chinese and used vernacular to write. The reason lies in Mu Dan’s pursuit of vitality and the requirements of Mu Dan’s poetics. At the same time,Mu Dan’s poetry language has two styles of obscurity and fluency.Obscurity is mainly determined by the internal quality of poetry, while fluency is due to Mu Dan’s use of prose-like language;in terms of imagery,in order to clearly and accurately convey modern experience,Mu Dan removed traditional imagery and introduced modern,“non-poetic” and novel imagery;in terms of style,Mu Dan’s change relative to tradition lies in the attempt of poetry drama, but the creation of poetry drama is not accidental. It is promoted under the guidance of its stylistic view and the joint influence of Chinese and foreign literary trends. The second chapter analyzes the evolution of emotions in Mu Dan’s poetry and its reasons. The emotions in Mu Dan’s poetry have gone through three stages: “old lyricism”,“exile of lyricism”,and “new lyricism”.The reason is that in the early days,Mu Dan was influenced by romanticism and his poetry was mainly lyrical. In the middle period,he was influenced by modernism and his poetry was mainly ideological. In the later period, due to the change of the times background,Mu Dan organically combined emotions with thoughts. The third chapter analyzes the transformation of the content of Mu Dan’s poetry and its reasons. This chapter will divide Mu Dan’s poetry into five stages for discussion:the first stage is 1934-1938,the second stage is 1939-1948,the third stage is 1949-1952,the fourth stage is 1953-1974,and the fifth stage is 1975-1976.In the first stage, because Mu Dan’s poetry was mainly lyrical, emotion was content at this stage;in the second stage because Mu Dan established a “contemporary sensitivity”,so the content of poetry changed to present and analyze modern society and modern people’s inner world;in the third stage when Mu Dan went to study in America due to cultural barriers,Mu Dan only created two poems criticizing America during this period;in the fourth stage due to the influence of cultural context at that time,Mu Dan’s poem themes tended to be popularized;in the fifth stage when political atmosphere relaxed, but because Mu Dan and his family had suffered a lot,Mu Dan withdrew his pen,and most poems expressed life insights and experiences.
