Yang Qiong(1846-1917),a Bai ethnic group from Dengchuan,Dali, was a famous scholar and educator in Yunnan at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China.Yang Qiong’s ideological and academic studies are deeply rooted in Chinese traditional Confucianism, and also involve western civilization and ideological culture. He extensively discussed the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western civilizations in his works such as " Commenting on the Analects of Confucius" and "Ji Cang Lou Collection",and clearly put forward the concept of "civilization" that modern China must uphold, and adhered to the spiritual civilization based on Confucian ideology and culture("Confucianism"),so he became an early figure in the ideological and academic history of Yunnan at the turn of ancient times and modern times who stirred up the trend of "Chinese style and western use".Based on the background of Yang Qiong’s life, academic and related research achievements, and the main basis of Yang Qiong’s "Commenting on the Analects of Confucius" and "Ji Cang Lou Collection",this paper analyzes and reveals Yang Qiong’s ideological purport, theoretical characteristics, limitations and value on the basis of systematically combing the main contents of Yang Qiong’s theory of Chinese and Western civilization. The main content of the paper has three parts.First, with the " Commenting on the Analects of Confucius" as the core, the influence of traditional Confucian education and the influence of the spread of Western learning to the east, has been selected from the modern philosophy of East and West. Therefore, from Yang Qiong’s " Commenting on the Analects of Confucius",this paper expounds his theory of Chinese and Western civilization, which is characterized by "keeping the original" and "chasing the end",Confucianism and Western learning, and "using Chinese culture and Western culture" to achieve great harmony, and explores the essence, ideological source and practical significance of Chinese civilization.Yang Qiong fixed the moral concepts and principles in the etiquette of Confucianism, which inevitably led to the loss of moral ideals. The second is to take the "Ji Cang Lou Collection" including "Ji Cang Lou Collection of Poems","Ji Cang Lou Collection of Essays" and "Ji Cang Lou Collection of Chapter" as the core. From three aspects of its analysis of the Chinese "six books" and the Thai characters, the argument of "changing the instrument(article)and changing the way(ceremony)",and the argument of "Chinese roundabout" and "Thai Kuaer",this paper expounds the important position of Confucianism in Chinese civilization, reveals the traditional value orientation of Chinese civilization, and its important role in maintaining the root of the national spirit.Thirdly,it is an analysis and overall evaluation of Yang Qiong’s theory of Chinese and Western civilization. From the comparison between Yang Qiong’s theory of Chinese and Western civilization and domestic thinkers of the same period,it is highlighted that the essence and characteristics of Yang Qiong’s theory of Chinese and Western civilization are to suppress, promote, neutralize, and solidify Confucianism. And Yang Qiong’s theory of Chinese and Western civilization is limited by both perspectives and theories.Yang Qiong, with the inheritance, essence, and future direction of Chinese civilization as the core, has established a unique academic ideological system, which has enlightening significance for today’s civilization construction and Confucianism research.
