English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)emphasizes the importance of developing students’ thinking quality and cultivating critical thinking as a core educational goal.Research has shown that questioning in the classroom can impact students’ critical thinking,particularly in reading classes where questioning is closely linked to their critical thinking dispositions.This study explores the relationship between the types of questions asked by teachers in reading classes and students’ critical thinking dispositions,with the aim of inspiring teachers to design reading class questions that promote the development of students’ critical thinking dispositions.This paper intends to explore the following three questions :(1)What are the characteristics of teacher questions in English reading classrooms?(2)What is the current state of students’ critical thinking dispositions?(3)What is the correlation between the types of questions teachers ask in reading classrooms and students’ disposition to think critically?The study involved four English teachers and 248 eighth-grade students from four classes in a middle school in Hebi City.Classroom observation and interviews were conducted to analyze the characteristics of the four teachers’ questioning types,and a questionnaire was used to assess students’ current levels of critical thinking dispositions.Correlation analysis was performed using SPSS26.0 to examine the relationship between the types of questions asked by teachers in reading classes and students’ critical thinking dispositions.The main findings are:(1)Overall,the four teachers ask more knowledge,understanding,and application-oriented questions,and involve fewer analysis,evaluation,and synthesis-oriented questions.(2)Students’ critical thinking dispositions is weak overall.(3)There is a correlation between the types of questioning in English reading classes and students’ critical thinking dispositions.Different types of teacher questioning also has different positive correlations with truth-seeking,open-mindedness,inquisitiveness and maturity dimensions of critical thinking disposition.The author hopes that teachers enable care about the cultivation of students’ critical thinking dispositions and use the types of classroom questions reasonably.
