Reading,as a key role in developing students’ core competence of English subject,plays an important role in English teaching and learning.General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition,2020 Revision)(Referred to as The New Curriculum Standards)puts forward clear requirements for the English reading volume and reading standards in senior high school.However,there are some problems in current senior high school students’ English reading,such as less reading time,insufficient reading materials and low reading interest.How to implement the requirements of The New Curriculum Standards,improve students’ reading interest,and teach students efficient reading methods are the focus of current reading teaching.Sustained silent reading,as a reading method,can provide students with the opportunity to read independently.In this reading teaching,students can get access to a wide range of comprehensive reading materials.According to the requirements of The New Curriculum Standards,the current situation of students’ English reading and the advantages of sustained silent reading in English reading,the study is aimed to exploring the effects of sustained silent reading on English reading achievements,reading attitude and autonomous learning ability of senior high school students.And the research questions are as follows:(1)What effect does sustained silent reading have on senior high school students’ English reading achievements?(2)What effect does sustained silent reading have on senior high school students’ English reading attitude?(3)What effect does sustained silent reading have on senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability?In order to answer the above research questions,an experimental study was conducted for one semester.In this study,90 students from two parallel classes in senior two of a county high school in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture,Gansu Province,were selected as the subjects.The two classes were randomly divided into the experimental class and the control class.The pre-test showed that the reading ability,reading attitude and autonomous learning ability of the two classes were similar,and the teacher and the class hours were the same.In the reading experiment,the sustained silent reading and regular reading teaching were carried out in the experimental class,while regular reading teaching and after-class reading practice were carried out in the control class.Tests,questionnaires,and interview were used as research instruments to collect data of English reading achievements,reading attitude and autonomous learning ability of students in two classes.The collected data were analyzed by SPSS24.0 software.The experiment results show that sustained silent reading has positive effects on students’ reading achievements,reading attitude and autonomous learning ability.It is feasible and practical to carry out sustained silent reading in high school English reading teaching.Firstly,sustained silent reading can effectively improve students’ reading achievements.In the reading test,the reading achievements of the experimental class is obviously higher than that of the control class.Secondly,sustained silent reading has a positive effect on students’ reading attitude.Specifically,students’ cognitive,conative,affective and self assessment attitude have been improved.Finally,sustained silent reading also helps to develop the students’ ability of autonomous learning.After the implementation of sustained silent reading,the students in the experimental class have improved in English learning plan,English learning strategy and English reading habits.
