| Julia Lovell is a famous British contemporary sinologist and translator of Chinese literature. She has successfully introduced Chinese literary works to readers in the English-speaking world, and has played an important role in promoting Chinese culture to “go global”.Her translation,Monkey King: Journey to the Wset has been well received since its publication in February 2021 and has been reported by Western major mainstream media, which has had a great impact on the English-speaking world.Corpus-based techniques, which provide a more objective and scientific perspective for such investigations, have steadily been used in the study of translator’s style as corpus linguistics has advanced. Thus, according to Baker’s interpretation of translator’s style, this thesis analyzes the translation style in Monkey King:Journey to the West, mainly from non-linguistic and linguistic features, and analyzes the reasons for the translator’s translation style through Lovell’ interviews, prefaces, and translation notes. The research shows that, firstly,at the level of non-linguistic,Julia Lovell’s selection of translation texts is influenced by her own experience and preferences. What she selected to translate is a supplement to other abridged transaltions of Xi You Ji.Guided by her translation thoughts “faithful recreation”,the translation strategy she chose is mainly trans-rewriting.In addition, she prefers to use paratexts to help readers better understand and read.Secondly, based on three corpus tools, namely Word Smith,Ant Conc,Tree Taggger, the linguistic features of Monkey King:Journey to the West at lexical, syntactical, and textual levels are studied. This thesis found that Julia Lovell prefers to use rich vocabulary, various reporting verbs, alternate short and long sentences, and a large number of em dashes instead of footnotes to explain and emphasize,to enhance the coherence and readability of the translation.Through Flesch Readability analysis, the difficulty of the translation is suitable for American high school students and above. Finally, factors such as the translator’s life experience, educational background, writing theme, research preferences, faithfully recreation ideas, and patrons and readers all have an impact on her translation style. It is found that Julia Lovell’s unique and effective translation style has influenced the acceptance of her translation among Western readers, which provides reference and enlightenment for seeking a model between translator’s style and translation acceptance, and exploring feasible ways to help Chinese literature “go global”. |
