| English reading is an important part of English learning and a major challenge for English learners. In order to better guide students to extract information from reading and to master better reading strategies, more and more scholars and teachers are thinking of more effective ways to teach reading.Reading circles has opened up a new possibility for reading teaching. However, the traditional reading circles teaching model is better suited to teach literary works, such as fiction. However, the types of discourse that appear in high school reading teaching are often more complex, containing essays, expository texts and many other types of discourse. This study proposes a reading circles activity based on discourse analysis. The reading circles based on discourse analysis meet the requirements of the core literacy objectives of the National English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2022 Edition)and the requirements of the outlook on English learning activities, and hence adapting the tasks of group members. In the reading circles based on discourse analysis, there are five roles in reading circles:discussion leader, summarizer, content analyst, attitude analyst and structure analyst.Guided by the theory of discourse analysis, this study attempts to apply reading circles teaching model based on discourse analysis to high school English reading teaching classroom. Two parallel classes from the senior one class of a high school in Jiayuguan were selected as EC and CC respectively for this experiment, using test papers, questionnaires and interviews as the research tools.A total of 15 reading texts are used as reading material, using nine reading texts from Compulsory 1 of the Beijing Normal University edition of the high school English textbook and six reading texts from Compulsory 1 of Thematic Reading of High School English, which published by 21st Century English. There are two main research questions:First, what effect does reading circles based on discourse analysis have on high school students’ English reading performance?Second, what effect does reading circles based on discourse analysis have on students’ cooperative learning ability?During the experimental study,English reading was taught by the same teacher, with the experimental class adopting reading circles teaching model based on discourse analysis and the control class being taught using an interactive teaching model. The experiment was planned for four months and the test was divided into a pre-test and a post-test.SPSS 26.0 was used to analyze the data and compare the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental and control classes.Based on the discussion of the results of the research data, the following research conclusions were drawn:One is that reading circles based on discourse analysis can improve students’ English reading performance. The other one is that reading circles based on discourse analysis can improve students’ cooperative learning skills, especially in three areas:group processing, promotive interactions and individual accountability. This experiment demonstrates the extent to which reading circles based on discourse analysis can guide the teaching practice of English reading in high schools. This method not only improves students’ English reading performance, but also enhances their cooperative learning skills to a certain extent. |
