English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)clearly states that teachers should use a wide range of curriculum resources,such as English picture books that correspond to English textbooks.Therefore,English teaching should provide students with a variety of reading materials.Many researches have been conducted on the criteria for selecting English picture books as well as the effects of English picture books.However,there have been few researches on improving pupils’ English reading achievements and interest in reading through English picture book reading instruction.As a result,this research focuses primarily on whether English picture book reading instruction improved pupils’ reading achievements and interest in reading.Based on relevant research on English picture books,Children’s Cognitive Development Theory,Language Input Hypothesis,and Whole Language Approach,the author conducts an experimental research to investigate the effects of English picture book reading instruction on pupils’ reading achievements and interest in reading.It aims to answer the following questions:1)What effects does English picture book reading instruction have on pupils’ reading achievements in primary school?2)What effects does English picture book reading instruction have on pupils’ interest in reading in primary school?In this research,the author randomly chose the research subjects from two parallel classes in Grade Four at Yan Jiaping Primary School.Before the experiment,a pre-test is carried out to find out whether the two classes have the same level of reading achievements in EC and CC.And the questionnaire is given out to EC before the experiment to investigate pupils’ interest in reading.During the four-month experiment,English picture books as the main reading materials were taught in EC,and Read and Write in the English textbook as the main reading materials were taught in CC.After four months,a post-test is carried out in EC and CC to see whether there is a notable difference in reading achievements between the two classes.After this research,the same questionnaire is sent to EC again in order to examine differences in pupils’ interest in reading.Finally,the obtained data are collected and analyzed by SPSS 25.0.The findings of this research can be summarized as follows.First,pupils’ reading achievements can be improved through English picture book reading instruction.Second,English picture book reading instruction can stimulate pupils’ interest in reading.The major implications of this research are that teachers should select suitable English picture books,stimulate pupils’ interest in reading,set realistic teaching objectives,and choose an appropriate teaching method in English picture book reading instruction.
