A Report On The E-C Translation Of Internet Of Things And Sensor Network For COVID-19 Under The Guidance Of Adaptation Theory

This is a report on the E-C translation of Internet of Things and Sensor Network for COVID-19 under the guidance of adaptation theory.One of the hottest topics in recent years is COVID-19 pandemic,which has caused great damage in all walks of life and exerted influences on the mental and physical health of people.Under the current circumstance,the application of sensor system and Internet of Things(Io T)devices play a significant role.As a result,the translator chose the book named Internet of Things and Sensor Network for COVID-19 as the translation material.In this report,the translator adopts adaptation theory to guide the practice.This theory holds that language use is a continuous choice-making process with certain degrees of consciousness and there are three hierarchical properties of language,they are variability,negotiability and adaptability.Notably,it is the four angles of investigation in pragmatics that provide guidance in translation: contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,salience of the adaptation process and dynamic adaptability.In terms of contextual correlates,in order to achieve communicative and linguistic adaptation,the translator employs alteration,amplification,omission and literal translation.In structural objects,the translator presents adaptation process at the lexical and syntactic levels.At the lexical level,the translator uses alteration to cope with different preferences for words in English and Chinese and the four-character phrases to adapt to the idiomatic expression.In addition,the translator employs alteration at the syntactic level,including restructuring,re-sequencing to deal with long and complicated sentences and passive sentences in the sci-tech texts.With salience in the adaptation process,the translator employs alteration and literal translation to adapt to the target language.Besides,In respect of dynamic adaptability,alteration,amplification and literal translation are being employed to handle comparative structures in the source text.This practice demonstrates that the adaptation theory is effective in guiding sci-tech translation at the intra-and extra-linguistic levels,which makes up for the shortcomings of previous translation theories.Under the guidance of adaptation theory,the translator could choose appropriate techniques to deal with obstacles in translation.It is hoped that the adaptability presented in this report could have implications and inspirations for the future investigation on both the theory and its application to sci-tech translation studies.At the same time,the translator hopes to introduce successful and effective experience and inspires some young and creative minds domestically to work out innovative solutions to cope with COVID-19 pandemic.
