Nowadays, animated images are not only the meaningful carriers of visual culture, but also give this visual culture the power to reproduce. The animated image is cultural, and what lies behind it is the incarnation of numerous ideologies. In recent years, anthropomorphic animal characters have been the subject of many animated masterpieces, most of which have one thing in common: the theme of irony. We can see that the dual metaphors of animal anthropomorphic characters are distinctive in their intensity and poignancy in revealing reality and in their depth of inquiry into human nature. The thesis uses literature research, analogical research, case study and summary induction to investigate the basic theories and interdisciplinary applications of Lacanian psychoanalysis, and to propose feasible strategies for the creation and interpretation of anthropomorphic animal characters in animation. In the first chapter,we discuss the background and significance of the selected topic,as well as the current status of domestic and international research, find the gaps in the research field, and identify the main contents of the study. The second chapter studies the Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, elaborates the important ideas and concepts in the theory, and traces and discusses the application of psychoanalysis in the field of film, anthropomorphic techniques and mechanisms,so as to prepare for the subsequent application of the theory in the field of animation.Chapter 3 combines Lacanian psychoanalytic theory with animation-related research, analyzes the feasibility of application, and completes the interdisciplinary theoretical mapping, and subdivides the connotation of animated characterization into three levels: the position of omniscience, the position of givenness, and the position of self-deception under the guidance of Lacan’s "three realms" theory.Chapter 4defines the scope of animal anthropomorphic characters, analyzes typical cases of characters from four themes: the selection of energetic symbols, character experience curve, character dilemma and character gender identity, and subdivides these characters into three types: weak anthropomorphism, strong anthropomorphism and substitution anthropomorphism in the psychoanalytic perspective.Chapter 5 further proposes strategies for animal anthropomorphic animation characterization in response to the analyses and summaries in Chapters 3 and 4,namely,taking advantage of the metaphor of animalistic symbolic connotations, constructing a smooth logic of character experience curve, and using gaze constraints to influence the audience’s viewing behavior and state. To sum up,Lacanian psychoanalytic theory can provide multi-level interpretation and shaping strategies for the study of animal anthropomorphic animation characters, thus bringing a richer animation viewing experience and more diversified means of text analysis, and to a certain extent can be extended to the study of other types of characters and animation-related theories, exploring more possibilities for the field of animation.
