Zhang Yanyuan,a famous painting and calligraphy theorist of Tang Dynasty,the Fa Shu Yao Lu compiled by him and the Famous Paintings of the Past Dynasties written by him are important works in the history of Chinese callgraphy and painting,with high research value.This topic takes the Famous Paintings of the Past Dynasties and the Fa Shu Yao Lu as the research objects,explors the rich connotation of Zhang Yanyuan’s callgraphy and painting theories,analyzes the origin of his theory,and explores the influence and significance of his theories.In addition to the introduction,it is divided into four chapters:Introduction: Based on the old and new Tang Books,Yu Jiaxi’s Si Ku Ti Yao Bian Zheng,Xu Zuliang’s Zhang Yanyuan Commentary Biography and other documents,to comb Zhang Yanyuan’s life and family background,undersyand the reasons for the compietion of the Famous Paintings of the Past Dynasties and the Fa Shu Yao Lu,as well as the spread of their versions,summarizes the research status,and provides the basis for a correct understanding of Zhang Yanyuan’s painting and calligraphy theorist.Chapter One: The history of the development of callgraphy and painting.The theory of“Callgraphy and painting are the same body” was first proposed by Zhang Yanyuan,whose interpretation of the relationship between callgraphy and painting in the Famous Paintings of the Past Dynasties dated back to the time when callgraphy and painting occurred,pointed out that callgraphy and painting are the same body but not divided,and raised the painting to an equal position with the callgraphy.In addition,as the first general history of painting in China,the Famous Paintings of the Past Dynasties completely presents the development history of painting,while the Fa Shu Yao Lu takes time as the axis,and its selected texts also highlight the development trajectory of calligraphy in the past dynasties.Chapter Two: The theories of callgraphy and painting creation.Zhang Yanyuan inherited Xie He’s theory of “six methods” and explained it,and arranged the positions of “six methods” successively,which enriched the theoretical connotation of “six methods”.His theories of callgraphy and painting creation are also based on the concept of “calligraphy is the same as painting in the use writing brush”.The theory of “intention before writing” and“one stroke” in calligraphy is introduced into painting,and put forward the theoretical views of “intending before the brush” and “painting with one stroke”.Zhang Yanyuan also emphasized that in the creation of callgraphy and painting,the state of “virtual and quiet”should be maintained to achieve a high degree of freedom of “unity of matter and self”,and create works that meet the “natural” character.Chapter Three: Appreciation and critical theories of calligraphy and painting.Zhang Yanyuan’s appreciation of calligraphy and painting evaluates figuers and works in a fair and objective manner.His classification of paintings into five classes is related to the classification of calligraphy evaluation by Zhang Huaiguan,Dou Ji and others.In addition the word “nature” in calligraphy is a very common evaluation ctiteria,but took “nature” as the first product was Zhang Yanyuan first proposed,and its connotation has something in common with Zhang Huaiguan’s “Shenpin”.At the same time,painting appreciation requires connoisseurs to have certain artistic accomplishment.Therefore,Zhang Yanyuan emphasized that connoisseurs of calligraphy and painting should be“extensive study”.Chapter Four: The value and significance of Zhang Yanyuan’s theories of calligraphy and painting.As a summary of the development of calligraphy and painting theories before late Tang Dynasty,the book of Fa Shu Yao Lu and the book of the famous paintings of the past dynasties not only have the value of the history of calligraphy and painting,but also have an important influence on the compilation of calligraphy and painting works and the development of the theory after Song Dynasty,and have a unique academic position in the history of ancient Chinese calligraphy and painting.In short,exploring Zhang Yanyuan’s theories of calligraphy and painting can not only correctly understand the development of calligraphy and painting,but also provide new thinking for the development of current calligraphy and painting art.
