Report On The Translation Of Subtitles Of National Treasure (Excerpt)

National Treasure is a cultural and museum exploration program launched by CCTV in late 2017,which uses cultural relics as a carrier and presents the stories behind the relics with diversified artistic expressions.The source text of this translation practice is the Chinese subtitle of the third episode of National Treasure Season 1,which involves dialogues,lines from historical dramas,and introductions to cultural relics.The translator took the three-dimensional transformation of Eco-translatology as the theoretical guidance and conducted translation practice from the linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions to give a readable translation.In the linguistic dimension,classical Chinese prose is annotated,and the four-character idioms are translated by literal translation,free translation,abridged translation,and supplementary translation.The transformation and adaptation of language dimension can be achieved by adjusting the word order and correcting inconsistent information to avoid unclear logical expressions.In the cultural dimension,methods such as additional translation,free translation,and literal translation are adopted for culture-specific items,whereas Chinese pinyin and annotation are employed to translate words that cannot be found in English.As for content related to China’s national image,necessary modifications have been made to achieve the effect of external publicity.In the communicative dimension,appellation words are adjusted based on the differences in Chinese and English address forms.The meaning of words and sentences has been extended to achieve the conversion and adaptation of communicative purposes.In addition,combining the temporal and spatial constraints of subtitles with three-dimensional transformation enables the translation to better adapt to the ecological context.It is hoped that this translation practice can provide some reference for the English subtitle translation of National Treasure and its related research and can arouse people’s attention to the overseas dissemination of excellent film and television works.
