This report is based on the translation practice of the tenth and eleventh chapters of Western China: A Journey to the Great Buddhist Center Mount Omei.The book records the Canadian missionary Virgil Hart’s journey from Shanghai to Mount Omei in 1887.And the excerpted chapters provide detailed information about local Buddhist culture,the historical site,the economic condition,and the natural scenery of Kiating and Mount Omei,which are of great literary and historical value.The report is divided into four parts: task description,process description,case analysis,and conclusion.The focus and difficulty of this translation practice lie in reproducing the social realities of West China in the late 19 th century and reflecting its literal and historical value.Under the guidance of relevance theory,the report analyses how to apply the translation techniques,such as annotation,addition,conversion,inversion,division,and omission,in the practice from the perspectives of providing adequate contextual effect and reducing unnecessary processing efforts to help the target reader to achieve optimal relevance.Through this translation practice,the translator has improved his translation ability,deepened his understanding of relevance theory and translation,and summarized the relevant translation skills.And he expects to offer some insight for future studies on the translation of travel journals written by foreigners.
