In this translation practice, the second chapter of Ethical Issues and Guidelines in Psychology,co-authored by British scholars Philip Banyard and Cara Flanagan,is chosen as the source text. The second chapter explores the ethical issues that psychologists face in conducting research. This informative text contains numerous psychological and medical terms, which embody the characteristics of being informative, knowledgeable, logical, and highly academic and professional.Given the features of the text, text typology proposed by Katharina Reiss is applied to analyze the translation techniques and cohesive devices adopted during the translation process. To keep the content invariant and to stay oriented to the target language are two criteria for evaluating the translation of informative texts.Based on these two criteria, the translator explores the feasibility of translation techniques at the lexical and syntactic levels, including annotation, paraphrasing, division, conversion and so forth. In addition, readability is another criterion for assessing the translation of informative texts, which inspires the translator to adopt cohesive devices, such as restoration and ellipsis,to render the shifts of personal pronouns at the discoursal level. This translation task transpires that text typology is feasible in exploring the translation of the informative text.It is expected that the translated work could enhance the understanding of Chinese readers on the ethical issues and guidelines in psychology.Furthermore,it is hoped that the findings of this report could shed light on future translation studies of similar texts.
