A Report On The Translation Of Pandemic Anxiety: Fear,stress,and Loss In Traumatic Times(chapter 3)

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic,the virus has been constantly mutating,and the situation for pandemic prevention and control remains severe around the world.In addition,the COVID-19 pandemic also have adverse effects on the individual’s mental health.However,the current research mainly focuses on how to prevent and control the pandemic and improve physical fitness,but overlooks the importance of mental health.To ameliorate the situation,the translator selects Pandemic Anxiety: Fear,Stress,and Loss in Traumatic Times by Margaret Wehrenberg as the translation material.Through vivid examples and practical techniques,the author describes the difficulties faced by American residents during the pandemic,as well as various mental health problems caused by it,and provides feasible solutions.As a popular science text,the content of this book is presented in an easily comprehensible manner with plain and vivid language.Nonetheless,as a result of disparities between Chinese and English languages and insufficient comprehension about mental health knowledge,there may still exist some difficulties in translation and understanding.During the translation process,the translator faced translation difficulties such as the three major linguistic differences between the Chinese and English,different translations for the second-person pronoun,and unique writing styles.To solve these problems,the translator adopts translation shift theory as the guiding principle for the translation,including level shift and category shift,and the author attempts to use discourse shift strategy,which aimed to enhance the logical coherence and readability between sentences and paragraphs.Through analyzing selected texts,the translator found that class shift,unit shift and structure shift are the three most commonly utilized forms of shift in E-C translation.Class shift is employed to solve differences in word usage between Chinese and English,converting nouns or noun phrases in English into commonly used verbs in Chinese.Unit shift is often used to break down and reorganize long English sentences into multiple shorter Chinese sentences.And structure shift is intended to deal with distinctions in the syntax and logical order between the two languages.This translation report analyzes the stylistic features of the original text and addresses difficulties during the translation process,with particular emphasis given to the application of translation shifts theory in translating popular science texts,with the aim of providing reference for the E-C translation of popular science texts.
