| Organic farming has a long history and its dominant principle is the harmony between man and nature.Organic farming has been used globally and will be the trend of China’s agricultural sustainable development in the future considering China’s strategy of sustainable development. As organic farming has arisen earlier in foreign countries and many related documents has appeared,it is necessary to translate these documents for the development of organic farming in China. The eighth chapter of The Global History of Organic Farming(Globalization of Organic Farming)is excerpted for translation and analysis in this translation practice. The author of the book employs documentary technique to connect the characters with the history of organic farming, and combines the ways of narration and discussion to give readers an understanding of the pioneers and development of the organic farming movement in the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan. The purpose of selecting the material for translation is to let the target language reader know how organic agriculture has developed step by step in these countries. It can allow domestic researchers and practitioners of organic farming methods, people interested in organic agriculture, and the general readers to see that everything develops in twists and turns, and so is organic agriculture. Therefore,we must adhere to the development of organic agriculture, absorb foreign organic agriculture development experience, and continue to explore and advance in light of China’s actual conditions. On the other hand, this translation practice focuses on the analysis of the translation of quotations and dashes, and puts forward translation strategies correspondingly,so as to provide some experiences for the translation of similar texts in the future.Nida’s functional equivalence,a very instructive theory, provides an ideal goal for translation and points out that translation needs to be relative and flexible. There are many quotations and dashes, which account for a large space in the text and are two major difficulties in translation. Therefore, this translation practice report puts the quotations and dashes as a priority. When dealing with the quotations, this paper mainly analyzes the translation of quoted content and the transformation of the structure of quotations.Direct translation, free translation and transposition are mainly used in the translation of the quoted content. As for the structure of the quotations,it is required to be transferred according to their tense and person of the quotations.Besides,Dashes have a variety of semantic functions, including supplement, explanation, enumeration, comparison, causation and equivalence.By analyzing dashes with different semantic functions, this paper sums up the specific methods of keeping dashes and abandoning dashes as a way to realize the equivalence of punctuation marks.Affected by subjective and objective factors, this translation practice still has some shortcomings. However, the author has gained a certain understanding of the translation of quotations and dashes, accumulated some terms and expressions related to agriculture and learned some foreign history of organic agriculture movement. |
