Today,with the vigorous development of video games,debates over pros and cons of video games emerge in endlessly.Therefore,it is necessary to face up to video games and rationally understand the value of video games.The source text is from the fourth and sixth chapters of Lost in a Good Game:Why We Play Video Games and what They Can Do for Us,published in 2019 by Pete Etchells,a professor of psychology at the Bath Spa University.In this book,he shares game players’ behavioral effects from a perspective of psychological experiments.Chapter five is not included in this report because it only introduces the achievements of psychology and has nothing to do with video games.The purpose of the translation is to help domestic readers understand the history and development of video games,and understand what video games can do for games players in a more in-depth way from a perspective of psychology.In addition,practices of psychological experiments involved in the source text are good references for domestic games developers and psychological researchers.There are two major difficulties in the translation,namely the translation of terminology and the translation of long and complex sentences.Guided by the theory of functional equivalence,the translator has managed translation methods like literal translation and annotation to solve the difficulty of terminology translations,and uses methods like shift and combination on the translation of long and complex sentences.Meanwhile,the translator attempts to make the content of the TT more suitable for Chinese expression habits as much as possible and provides the target readers the same reading experience with the ST readers.The functional equivalence theory helped in a series of problems encountered in translations.The translator explored how to utilize appropriate translation methods to achieve functional equivalence in his translation,and found the theory’s value in improving the efficiency and quality of translation in popular science texts,while providing an important guiding role.Finally,the translator expects that this report could offer some references for scholars and translators who are concerned with the research.
